All in a Day Dear Diary and Wartime Whimsy
A patchwork day in West Wilson Boulevard brings eerie nights and a returning husband from the navy on leave. A restaurant takes payment with a commemorative half dollar showing Mayflower and Puritan motifs. Kinsey, stationed in Italy with Marlene Dietrich, sends family news. Navy jokes spread as Murph moves to Baltimore, rumor runs of rationed gas, and a bartender offers five gallons for a price. Adelaide Willard runs a nurse aide program smoothly while trailers house war workers. A county man jokes that beards invite icicles rather than cold protection. A Washington station restaurant scene ends with a hostess explaining gendered seating to avoid “pickup” stories. Soldiers at Martinsburg hospital request a care postcard when returning home. A new USO wives group forms, Pauline Meredith visits the White House, and Mrs Roosevelt remains a longtime friend from Arthurdale. A local woman fears future storms washing away road and terrace soil and grass.
