Three-state Odd Fellows gather for Hagerstown meeting

Members from 17 lodges across three states attended the mass Odd Fellows meeting at the Hagerstown temple on Wednesday evening. Sovereign grand master L. F. Bridges spoke, flanked by past sovereign grandmaster C. M. Harris and his staff. Potomac Lodge No. 31 hosted refreshments.

North High Band To Give Concert

The North Hagerstown High School Band under Joan Fignar will present a 6:30 pm concert on the school grounds featuring On the Hudson You're a Grand Old Flag Navy Blue and Daily Mail Festival March. A campaign is under way to raise money to purchase uniforms for the band members. Columbus was the first importer of wine into the New World carrying sherry from Jerez on his discovery voyage.

Many Treated At Hospital Over Holiday

Injuries from falls bites and other accidents filled Washington County Hospital emergency room during Memorial Day. Notable cases include nine year old Lloyd Younker with a dislocated elbow and several others with dog bites cuts and fractures. Also reported are a ladder fall fracturing an arm and a dog bite requiring sutures among multiple injuries from the holiday period. Poppy sales raised 215 for rehabilitation work.

Surrey School to Open New Summer Playground Site

The Summer Playgrounds Committee plans a Surrey School playground this summer replacing Westview Homes. A dozen sites are slated including Broadway Howard Surrey Woodland Way Central Chemical Salvation Army at George Street East End Park Reservoir Park Ridge Avenue Hager Park Hamilton Park and Wheaton Park. The committee re elected C A Gardner as chair James Dudley as vice chair Mrs Woodford Norment as secretary Claude Merckie as treasurer. Personnel committee includes Harold Peters Evan Crossley and Francis Connelly. Budget committee members are Ray Danzer Sr and Lloyd Marcus. Grounds committee comprises Richard Martin James Dudley and Captain Robert Gilbert. The group set its next meeting for June 7 to finalize the operations schedule.

The Free Staters drum and bugle corps of Morris Frock Post No 42 traveled through Waynesboro for Memorial Day activities at 9 a m and Greencastle at 10 30 a m then joined Antietam National Cemetery events after lunch with no prizes offered. John Saxon leads a teen rock group in Rock Pretty Baby at the Colonial theater.

Dual Highway To Start Soon South Of Here

West Virginia plans to advertise for construction bids on a seven mile section of U S Route 1 to convert the road into a limited access dual highway from Marlowe to west of Martinsburg at the State Route Nine junction. The project ties to Maryland and Pennsylvania work and aims to bypass Martinsburg. Estimated cost around one million dollars per mile with ten percent state share under federal highway plan.

Carol Hauver Wins Blazer Award at Goucher College

Carol A. Hauver daughter of Dr and Mrs Richard Hauver of 1172 The Terrace was named one of three Goucher College juniors to receive a Blazer Award. The honor recognizes scholarship participation leadership athletic ability and sportsmanship. Miss Hauver, a George School PA graduate, will serve next year as president of the Athletic Association.
