President Roosevelt told Congress inflation threatens defense and asked authority to establish price and rent ceilings. He urged powers to acquire materials to ensure price stability and curb excess credit. He did not seek wage controls, trusting voluntary labor restraint to prevent sharp wage rises.
Monday night hatchet attack on 7th Foundry Street led to city court fines for John Pasquale 47 and Joe Britti 68 each at 25 dollars. Helen Cottrill was fined 10 for drunken disorderly conduct. Pasquale pleaded guilty to striking Cottrill with a hatchet while Britti was found guilty after trial.
Jr Ashton Allis, vice president of Grace National Bank of New York, was elected director of the Fairchild Line and Airplane Corporation. Announcement came from John Stuart, assistant to the president. Allis is grandson of the late Joseph Ashton, a noted Shepherdstown manufacturer.
The U S Weather Bureau notes local thundershowers this afternoon with generally fair pattern and warmer temperatures tonight and Thursday morning. Chesapeake Bay expects local thunder showers with squalls this afternoon and again Thursday afternoon. Winds shift from southwest to northwest Thursday afternoon.

A 14 year old girl testified she was served and drank beer Sunday night at Mike Farrie’s Madison avenue bar. Magistrate Bostetter found Farrie and bartender Roy Swartz not guilty for lack of sufficient evidence. Ruth Ritter claimed Betty was served. officers testified girls admitted beer was served. Farrie defended his record as law abiding and not present at the time.
William W. Arbuckle suspended manager of the Senate restaurant was indicted in federal court on ten counts of embezzlement involving defalcations totaling 1080 dollars in September 1938. The grand jury filed the charges in Washington on July 30.
Jack Sisk testified in James Lee Miller’s murder trial at Cumberland claiming threats to his life if he spoke names. He described bloodstains on Loveless and Miller’s clothing, finding Raleigh Poffenberger alive and then later dead, and his own actions to mislead investigators and help cover the crime.
Two police squads near East Baltimore street failed to capture two men seen breaking into the International Harvester Company garage. The intruders fled after the nightwatchman alerted headquarters. The loot from last week included about $200 in tools. Earlier, Raymond Durboran reported a garage break-in with a stolen car heater and gasoline, and Arnold Dye reported a bicycle theft from the Maryland theatre alley.
In Council Bluff Indiana on July 30 a son was born to the Clarence McDonald family. The infant arrived with four sharp teeth all in the lower jaw, an unusual early set noted by relatives.
Two cool air masses from the Atlantic and the Dakotas meet to end the worst heat wave of 1941. Thunderstorms brought rain last night, breaking the heat, but this morning the air warmed again. Yesterday’s high reached 87 degrees, about 16 degrees below Monday’s record. Weather observer J A Miller in Keedysville notes the low at 70 and that by 9 am the temperature rose.
Defense Councils of Western Maryland counties will gather in Hagerstown at 6 p m Friday August 8 to organize. Executive Secretary Isaac S. George of the Council of Defense and Resources will attend to aid organization and explain powers and duties of district councils as set by the last legislature. Members were appointed by Governor O Conor on July 19.
Pvt. Clarence Bennett of Hagerstown drowned July 19 1941 after a boat sank at St Johns Newfoundland. The body will be sent home for burial with a fellow soldier accompanying. Major Daniel J. Berry reports Bennett and another swimmer started for shore while a third man clung to the wreckage and failed to be saved.
Ottawa reports charges of enemy sabotage and arrests after the Aluminum Company of Canada Arvida plant resumed operations following a five day strike. Troops guarded the plant as Munitions Minister Howe ordered an inquiry into the shutdown begun by 300 workers seizing control. about 4,000 workers struck in solidarity. Howe called the event a suspected enemy sabotage and said arrests will be made. peak production expected to take three weeks to resume.
Changes in the state income tax law reduce this county’s total state tax fund share this year by about 11,000. Last year the county and municipalities received around 33,000. this year Washington county’s initial distributive share is 22,935, reported by the Board of County Commissioners and State Comptroller Tawes in Annapolis.
City Plumbing Inspector John W. Munson will seek an ordinance with teeth at the next Mayor and City Council meeting. He reports hundreds of properties connected to the municipal sewer without payment, some for up to seven years, costing the city thousands yearly. A citywide survey is underway to uncover more unrecorded connections.
The Mayor and Council directed the Street Department to install several street lights along North Prospect Street to improve visibility and safety for drivers and pedestrians.
The Treasury department disclosed the seizure of 19 Japanese fishing boats in Hawaiian waters this spring. Customs charged false registry, but officials alleged espionage use. Vessels reportedly carried radio gear and navigational charts not used for fishing.
Washington reports Sumner Welles announced Harry Hopkins has gone to Moscow to discuss American aid with Soviet leaders. Hopkins arrived from London on a surprise visit to the Soviet capital to discuss Red Army needs, accompanied by Brig. Gen. Joseph T. McNarney and Lieut. John R. Alison.
The House Military Committee approved legislation to retain selectees National Guardsmen Reserve officers and enlisted personnel for military training beyond one year in a 15 to 7 vote The measure mirrors the Senate version with an added allowance for the President to extend service for Guardsmen Chairman May of Kentucky said he would seek special House agenda status Friday.
Thirty Japanese transports began disembarking troops at Cap St Jacques near Saigon. Fourteen vessels carrying 13,000 troops, with a destroyer, entered Saigon harbor at dawn as Japan extends occupation of southern Indo China. Some ships delayed due to river pilot shortages. troops to be stationed locally tonight or tomorrow.
London July 30 British foreign office announced a Polish Soviet Russian agreement granting amnesty freeing all Polish prisoners held in Russia and wiping out territorial changes in Poland from the German Russian 1939 partitions restoring Poland as it stood before those treaties.
Reports from North China say American and British companies in the Japanese occupied area are barred from doing business except in Peiping and Tientsin. In Shantung province all American and British properties are under protective custody. Firms affected include Texas and Socony oil. Sentries guard some sites while Chinese pickets guard others. Nanking, under Japanese control, might trigger U S and British retaliation as foreign holdings are restricted.
In Winston-Salem two women motorists argued over a single parking space. The standstill lasted two hours while onlookers offered advice and refreshments and collected enough to pay one fine. Ultimately tickets were issued but the space went to another person.
Three barns in Frederick county were struck by lightning during storms yesterday afternoon and last night. The Massell farm barn near Harrisville, the Roland Mullinix barn near Florence, and the Oscar L Myers farm barn near Myersville were burned and destroyed with their contents.
United States gunboat Tutuila escaped injury when a Japanese raid over Shanghai dropped a bomb ten yards away. The blast damaged small boats deck gear and a residence of the U S embassy across the river. Stern superstructure suffered slight damage. crew of 58 normally aboard.
The Mayor and Council plan to curb smoke nuisance in West End prompting the city clerk to request model ordinances from the Conference of Mayors. Ha serstown is a member. A South End factory installed a smoke arrester and conditions improved. residents blame a factory and a railroad for the remaining issues.
A corps of 460 trained United States construction men arrived today at a port in northern Ireland and were greeted aboard ship by Captain H. D. R. Margesson. E. A. V. MacPherson said their work would be on harbor facilities and the war secretary welcomed them, led by E. R. Holland of Williamsburg Washington. The crossing was uneventful.
Soldiers at Camp Robinson Arkansas competed in an army quiz contest at the canteen on July 30. Forty two soldiers lined up as officers from the Nebraska regiment made purchases. The contest ended in a tie and the officers remain unconvinced about the outcome.
