An American woman wounded in northern Spain’s revolutionary fighting was identified as Mrs. Fernando Gallardo, daughter of Col. D. B. McKay, editor of the Tampa Times. The report ties the incident to calls to oust enemies from office and arrests across Washington.
Father Baker, Lackawanna’s famed Padre of the Poor and one of the oldest Catholic priests in the United States, died after a long illness at Our Lady of Victory hospital. Born February 16, 1841 in Buffalo, he was ordained March 19, 1876. His fiftieth anniversary drew 14 bishops and 700 priests.
In Rome Mussolini marked another birthday, appearing at Palazzo Venezia to oversee duties as head of the Fascist state, then planned a private family celebration. Italian newspapers gave little coverage to the anniversary. Continued on Page 10.

Sheriff Max C. Malott of Washington County says idle threats to shoot him will not stop his campaign to clear gambling devices. He notes a reliable tip warned of violence, but vows continued seizures and arrests as he has previously seized two slot machines.
Democratic and Republican lawmakers demanded the jobless army end its picketing of the State House in Harrisburg. Nearly 2,000 unemployed men women and children cheered for $100 million in relief, vowing to stay until demands are met, as the uproar interrupted Senate revenue debates for relief funds and food orders.

Washington July 29 The Public Works Administration opened its third building program with emphasis on small scale projects to be quickly built. A new-style program announced under President Roosevelt allocates 22,742,034 dollars for 352 projects in 37 states with a one year finish mandate. Features include 45 percent donations, PWA lending 2,142,000 dollars to cover communities 55 percent share, and orders to commence by October 1 1936 peak by year end and complete by October 1 1937.
Pia L. Ramsey told the Public Service Commission that electrical storms repeatedly shut off power in Rockville Maryland the Harford county town experiencing overnight outages during each storm in summer.
Moscow reports the Soviet government decreed champagne production rise from 300000 bottles this year to 12000000 in 1942 to provide greater freedom and abundance for the Russian proletariat. Officials say champagne will no longer be a luxury.

Ex-professor Rep John Lee won the Oklahoma Democratic U S Senate nomination, defeating Gov E W Marland by more than 195000 votes as 3132 of 3411 precincts reported. Lee will face Republican Herbert K Hyde in the November general election for the seat formerly held by Thomas P Gore.
Representative David J. Lewis of Cumberland says the Works Progress Administration will employ 50 needy coal miners from Georgia’s Creek in Western Maryland. The men will be assigned to WPA projects and drawn from Barton Frostburg Lonaconing and Westernport.
Two young brothers Wayne and Jimmy Hamlin aged 10 and 12 were chained to a board in a basement when a gasoline soaked rug ignited. Their father Roy Hamblin 42 a WPA worker was jailed on charges of chaining them to keep them at home as the sister Lois 14 and mother Goldie freed them and beat out the flames. The fire caused little damage.
Glen Cove Long Island July 29 J P Morgan's yacht Consair loaded with supplies and a full crew on hand indicated today that the financier would depart soon on his planned cruise to Europe.
Chrysler Corp president K. T. Keller announced an additional cash bonus of 2.06 million dollars to be distributed August 19 to employees in the United States Canada England and Belgium. This follows a 2.3 million dollar bonus paid February 14 to 59 000 workers.
One hundred forty Washington County farmers who signed corn hog contracts with the government in 1955 expect final payments within the next week. Checks have been distributed in other Western Maryland counties this week, including Frederick where 400 farmers received about $26,000. The first corn hog checks for 1935 arrived here about a year ago under the old AAA setup. Under the new soil conservation program many local farmers joined, but benefits and timing of first payments remain undetermined.
Soil Conservation Service workers clearing mountain land in the southern county captured five flying squirrels after felling a tree. One fled toward a worker, another disappeared, the mother stayed nearby guiding four young. The squirrels were taken to a local pet shop for exhibition.
In Roanoke on July 29 Dr. Joseph T. Graham administered first aid to two automobile crash victims and assisted in placing them in an ambulance. He then fractured his own kneecap while getting into his car to depart the scene.
Sterling Illinois July 29 A barrage of bullets and bricks marks a renewed flare of violence at the Northwestern Barb Wire Company plant site of a union drive. Deputy sheriffs guarding the property reported 25 or 39 rifle bullets fired from cover but none hit the plant walls. Rocks were hurled and deputies used gas bombs before demonstrators withdrew.
The Board of State Aid and Charities outlined how county welfare boards may hire case workers for old age pensions aid to dependent children and aid to the blind. Staff size depends on county population and aid load, with allowances to exceed limits to speed up old age pension investigations. Salaries must stay within state-established limits.
Lightning struck a cottage on Campo Bello Islands near the Roosevelt summer home in Lubec Maine this morning. The building was damaged but no one was injured as President and his family vacation nearby.
Fifteen men feared drowned after the motor ship Material Service capsized four miles off Chicago. Seven crew rescued, including First Mate John M. Johnson who described the 2 to 3 am sinking. Coast guard and towing vessels evacuated survivors and searched for the missing, including Captain C. D. Brown and 15 others.
In Baltimore on July 29 Federal Judge W Calvin Chestnut placed Jerome Mowbray and Hallie Creighton on two years probation after they pleaded guilty to attempted extortion and sending a threatening letter. Each received a suspended sentence of one year and one day and a $100 fine. The alleged plot sought $100 from Mrs Fletcher Williamson, daughter of Legi Phillips, Cambridge Packer.
Col Charles A Lindbergh left Berlin for Rhinow after inquiring about Lieut Ernst Udet who was hurt when his plane broke apart at Warnemunde. Udet was reported to be recovering rapidly. Lindbergh received the German aero club emblem for distinguished service in aviation.
A 2.3 mile section from Camp Ritchie to Blue Ridge Summit and the road through Camp Ritchie will receive surface treatment in the coming days. Frederick County will gain 106.21 miles of treated road due to winter frost damage on macadam. The project uses the state maintenance fund with no new construction. A 13.35 mile segment of the National Highway from South Mountain to Frederick is included.
