The National Park Service displays a new Antietam relic museum in two rooms of the battlefield site administration building. Highlights include uniforms of General Henry Kyd Douglas and a Union lieutenant, hospital stores, a lard lamp, maps, papers, currency, guns, swords, bullets, and a Jackson note to a Sharpsburg girl. The museum opens Sundays and other times as staff permit.

Relief From Heat Spreads. Deaths Rise in 86 Cities
Cool air began easing July heat across the plains and Great Lakes region with showers hinting at wider relief by Saturday. The Federal Census Bureau reports a 16 percent rise in deaths in 86 major cities for the week ended July 17 due to excessive temperatures. In Jersey City a laborer, Robert Neill, was hospitalized after walking through a window frame while renovations created a glass hazard. Five year old John Perrott was treated for a fractured leg at the hospital on George Street.

Sheriff Recovers Escaped Prisoner Near Belair
H B Fletcher aged 25 was captured by Harford County Sheriff Reed at Belair within 24 hours of escaping from the Roxbury State Penal Farm. Fletcher, who fled after a farm officer was about to search his home near Conowingo, will be returned to the House of Correction today. Coworker Anton Rosmeisel, 44, also escaped and may be captured soon after initially heading to Harrisburg.

A severe nail and thunder storm struck the Cove section of Garrett county Maryland on Fay 24 causing hundreds of dollars in crop and road damage. Hail beat down standing crops and heavy rains washed out fields and flooded the highway from U S Route 219 into Friendsville. Traffic halted temporarily as the storm centered near Bear Creek.
