Explosion at Peoria distillery kills two in rackhouse blaze
A massive blast at the Hiram Walker distillery in Peoria Illinois left two workers John Barton and William Hulsebus unaccounted for while about 24 were injured. The fire destroyed rackhouse No. 3 and a cooperage shop, threatening six million gallons of aging whiskey and causing an estimated 2.5 million dollars in damage. Frank Dornberger, blown through a doorway, described the blast's force and the ensuing flames. Continues on page 10.

State guards tighten control in Terre Haute strike
Terre Haute Ind July 23 Indiana National Guardsmen numbering 1500 to 2000 sealed off a mile square zone around the Columbian Enameling plant as a general strike entered its second day. A guardsman Eugene Harvey was injured by a cement piece as about 1000 sympathizers resisted. Windows were broken and tear gas was used before dispersal. Five of the alleged sympathizers were involved.

Ex Director Acquitted in Hospital Larceny Case
Mrs Lillian McDonald former director of occupational therapy at Springfield State Hospital was acquitted of larceny and embezzlement charges. Verdicts were returned by Carroll county circuit court before Chief Judge Francis Neal Park. Prosecution said she shipped 1200 articles valued at 760 from the hospital after resigning for a Miami position. She testified she bought the articles or provided inmates the materials or brought them from Little Rock Arkansas where she had lived eight years.
