Treasury weighs new taxes on wealthy corporations and individuals
Washington July 22 The treasury says the ninth deficit may reach four billion dollars this year and is studying higher taxes on big corporations and certain individuals with moderate incomes. Acting Secretary Roswell Magill discussed proposals to cut personal exemptions and raise rates, while President Roosevelt directs plans to bolster taxes on undistributed profits and capital gains. He noted lawmakers have long sought to lower single and head of family exemptions, and debated taxing future salaries of state and local workers as well as future state bond issues. The Justice Department backs constitutional limits on taxing outstanding interest and discusses court rulings on future taxes. The treasury plans a bill to repeal exemptions for future years, with no firm stance yet on back-year salaries for quasi-government agencies.
