President Truman prepares for a charged special session as Republicans debate strategy led by Gov. Thomas E. Dewey. Dewey and campaign aides plan to cooperate with Taft and Martin while avoiding a summer-long legislative drag, aiming to shape a constructive agenda and frame the GOP in opposition for the fall campaign.
The South debates strategy to block Truman and unite regional Democrats under Thurmond. Arkansas Governor Laney notes regional outnumbering and urges unity to avoid political strife as delegates to the states rights meeting lack direct electorate mandates. Alabama and Mississippi electors are pledged against Truman. A crocodile reportedly killed and injured between 40 and 50 people before being shot.
North Carolina faces a potential peak in polio with 197 new cases last week raising the year total to 1,773. The National Foundation opened a 70 bed emergency unit at Camp Sutton near Charlotte with plans for expanded units at Camp Butner near Durham and Camp Mackall in Scotland County. Health official Dr S W Ramnorton defined the epidemic area from Asheville to Raleigh and urged short term summer camps to suspend operations and long term camps to restrict visitors from the epidemic region.
James W. McCarty 25 of Hancock Rt 2 was charged with reckless driving after his car rear-ended Roy S. Shoemaker 17 of Hancock Rt 2 on the Park Head level of Rt 40. No injuries were reported. McCarty’s car sustained about 300 dollars in damage and Shoemaker’s about 450 dollars as a guard fence post and cable were snapped.
The Weather Bureau warns against wasting dry ice on potential winter cloud seeding. After a winter of experiments by scientists aiming to transform deserts into cropland, and with a related summer program underway, the agency says results are not yet conclusive.
Officials report that methods attempted to induce rain from winter type stratus clouds yielded no meaningful precipitation unless natural rain or snow occurred within 3 miles of treated clouds. Even when precipitation occurred, it arrived too late to matter economically.
