Charles W Hoffman reports the death of his brother Carlton Hoffman age 37 from accidental pistol discharge in Middleburg Virginia. The Hoffman Chevrolet Company owner’s family mourns with parents Mr and Mrs Joseph Hoffman and brother Charles W of this city. Funeral services are set for tomorrow in Middleburg and the local company will close all day out of respect.
Sacramento July 19 state treasurer Charles Johnson set ablaze retired state bonds valued at 1.99 million and retired coupons totaling 1.44726 million in a controlled burn. No one panicked as the ceremony marked destruction of obsolete securities.

Harry M Crandall Washingtons pioneer theater magnate once valued at over 6 million dollars reportedly left an estate of only a $500 diamond ring a $50 gold watch and chain $25 in clothing and $75 in office furniture. Mrs Crandall said stock he owned was pawned and worthless. Crandalls theater chain had been taken over by Warner Bros.
July 19 in Oklahoma City Dr. Dale Collins reports his fishing party caught 15 bass and strung them on a line. The line slipped into the lake and he dived after them. Fifteen minutes later he felt a strike and hauled up all 15 bass still neatly strung.
W Harry Angle prominent contractor is in Washington County Hospital for observation after a Saturday illness. His condition is favorable. Angle’s aunt Mrs William Dodd, 3, of Cumberland, is critically ill after a serious operation.
Readers vote to crown Miss Antietam the official hostess of the Antietam Commemoration in Western Maryland. The winner, aged 15 or over and among eleven county towns, will greet officials and the President, head the grand parade, and attend major balls.
Foreign Secretary Anthony Eden told the House of Commons Britain has demanded the Spanish insurgents free the captured British merchantman Morton. The demand was sent through Sir Herbert Chilton at Hendaye to General Franco, with Britain warning he would be held responsible for any damage. Alfred Duff Cooper earlier announced Morton was seized by insurgent cruiser Almirante Cervera inside Spanish waters near Santander.
John W. Corby, an aged resident of Williamsport, narrowly escaped serious injury when struck on the head by a .22-calibre bullet believed fired from a cat rifle by boys. The bullet left a crease in his forehead as he sat in his garden. Police investigated and found several boys nearby but no gun.
An assassination attempt on Col. Adam Koc, leader of the Polish Nationalist movement, failed when a bomb exploded prematurely at his villa in Swidry near Warsaw. The would-be assassin was killed in the blast.

William Jenkins of Baltimore dies after a head on crash near Ridgeville on the National highway. Five others are injured. The driver of one car, Charles Butler, is in custody and may face manslaughter charges. Other injured include occupants of both vehicles.
Charles B. Brown of the U S Engineers plans to dive the White River near Newport Arkansas armed with spears and diving gear to hunt the so called monster. Brown a river bottom walker with 14 years of experience says he will search through Thursday and possibly into Sunday to verify reports of a gray hulking creature seen by local residents.
Honolulu July 19 The search for Amelia Earhart and navigator Frederick J Noonan ended as four naval ships and 1 560 sailors were pulled from the hunt after 16 days of scouring 250 000 square miles of ocean near Howland Island. Earhart hoped to circle the globe for commercial routes while pursuing a safe landing. The navy halted the operation when the search was deemed hopeless.
Eleanor Gruber, 20, of Foundry Street, was sentenced to fifteen days in city court by Justice John D. Dunn after police say she interfered during the arrest of two robbery suspects. Officers recover $75 worth of meats and canned goods from Armour and Company warehouse on West Church Street. A third man detained may be used as State's witness in the forthcoming trial.

Sources say Brooks Hars, Arkansas Democratic national committeeman, may receive the interim appointment.
Governor Herbert H. Lehman wrote to Senator Robert F. Wagner urging opposition to Roosevelt’s Supreme Court reorganization bill. Lehman, Roosevelt’s Democratic successor in New York, said he had long held this view and his position has strengthened in the months since.

Daniel Henson elderly resident of Blair's Valley was bitten on the thumb by a copperhead while in his garden Saturday. He drank whiskey before treatment but the thumb swelled and pain grew until anti venom serum was rushed from ClearSpring by the Health Department. Henson recovered after receiving the serum and returned home. the snake was not located despite neighbor searches.
Eleven youths, accused as ringleaders of a riot at Cheltenham House of Reform, will stand trial in police court in Upper Marlboro. The disturbance began Friday night after an earlier outbreak Thursday, with more than 100 boys fleeing the home and damage to the cottage. State's Attorney Allan Bowie had not decided on charges. The eleven are held on temporary charges of eyespray from the reformatory.
