Two Injured in Auto Accidents in Hagerstown

A man and a four year old girl were injured in separate automobile crashes yesterday evening in Hagerstown. Herman Weener of Frederick sustained severe head injuries when his car collided with another driven by Harry G. Rinehart of Hagerstown Route 3 at Baltimore and Mill streets. Weener’s wife rode in the same vehicle operated by Horace J. Castley of Frederick. Mrs Weener escaped unharmed. Dolores Winters of the 400 block of George street, four, sustained brush burns when struck near her home by a car driven by Alice I Bryan of Willia. The girl was taken to the hospital and later released. The accident was ruled unavoidable.

Federal Power Commission Plans 5-Year Electrical Expansion

The Federal Power Commission proposed a $1 billion nationwide electrical power expansion over five years to add about 5 million kilowatts to the 42 million kw capacity. The Reconstruction Finance Corp would advance up to $200 million annually to utilities on a self liquidating basis, with most private funding expected. Olds said hydro projects would average $170 million yearly, much of which funds flood control and navigation. The plan calls for orders for steam and hydro generators to ensure five years of continuous capacity, with annual output targets: about 2.5 million kw steam and 1.0 million kw hydro.

Power program plots river basin hydro projects

The passage outlines station unit plans to enable priority arrangements and government financing via an RFC subsidiary. It urges utilities to participate on lease purchase terms and calls on US Engineers, the Bureau of Reclamation, TVA and others to build river basin projects targeting about 1,000,000 kilowatts annually. Specifics include Susquehanna Conowingo 72,000 kW by 1946 and Youghiogheny Creflin 30,000 kW by 1948, with Swallow Falls 15,000 kW also by 1948.

Prospects for Crops Improved in Maryland 1841 report

Maryland crops showed mixed results in the first half of 1841 with weather swings. By July 1 production of corn rye hay was near average while wheat oats and potatoes lagged due to reduced acreage, and barley and tobacco rose above average according to the Maryland crop reporting service.

115th Starts To Get Tough At Fort Meade

The 145th Infantry Regiment opens a 250 yard steeplechase obstacle course in sand to train men in crossing barriers, ditches, ropes, planks, and water jumps. Col. D John Markey leads the effort with Lt Col Harry E Fook guiding Company E of the Second Battalion. Trials test speed, endurance, and handling of future equipment as squads prepare for regimental competition and champion teams.

Regiment Starts Marching Tests At Fort Meade

Eight hundred officers and men of the 115th Infantry Regiment led by Col D John Markey began a 20 mile standard army march this week at Fort Meade Maryland. Of the group 863 completed the full distance Regent headquarters said Wednesday Imports of Scotch whisky totaled 2 200 000 gallons in January April according to the Department of Commerce reports.
