The Health department cracked down on promiscuous garbage dumping and homeowner negligence. A North End resident was fined 3 dollars for leaving garbage in his backyard, and County Commissioners ordered action against dumping near Cearfoss. Past summers saw ongoing dumping problems in alleys and yards.
Staunton Virginia July 17 A Moore proprietor of the Stonewall Jackson hotel and Fairway tavern and regional Chamber of Commerce president was killed instantly when his coupe wrecked after colliding with a sedan on Lee highway near Skyline Drive Three others were injured including Mrs Claude Bishop of Charlotte North Carolina who suffered a broken collar bone and Miss Mary W Bell of Staunton who had a compound fracture of the left leg Moore's car rode 150 feet, rolled twice, and Mrs Moore witnessed the crash from another vehicle
H A Raum of Shippensburg was arrested at 9 AM after his car hit a Hagerstown Brewing Co truck at Baltimore and Summit. He faced a drunken driving charge, was arraigned at $30 and fined $100 before Justice Heard, who later postponed further arraignment due to Raum's cancer plea and request for better condition.
Washington July 17 Democrats in the House Ways and Means Committee moved to speed a new inheritance tax bill. Chairman Doughton set the panel in executive session to ratify a tactic agreement with Lovell Parker and Middleton Beaman. Proposals discussed included a 10 year payment window with low interest to prevent forced liquidation and allowing parent to transfer to a son.
