Fruit Growers To Meet On Tuesday In Hancock
Fruit growers in Hancock County will meet with Office of Defense Transportation officials next Tuesday evening July 18 in Stanley Fulton’s store Hancock to discuss plans for supplementing local transportation for moving the harvest. County Agent Mark Miller announced the meeting saying good to excellent crops might not reach markets if only regular transport is used due to war demands. Edward R. Gisburne, district ODT manager, will attend and efforts to hire a Philadelphia DDT trucking specialist are underway. One plan would use Pennsylvania trucking during the Washington County emergency in exchange for local equipment going to northern growers later. The meeting, possibly the first of its kind in the county’s history, may be followed by a Smithsburg gathering. All growers urged to attend at 3:15 p.m.
