American doughboys press toward St Lo in France as fresh units reinforce the attack. U S infantry consolidates Hill 322 northeast of the city, pushing two miles of hedge rows under hedged defenses and aided by improved observation from a dominating ridge.
Bond drive results show Washington county attaining 711 percent of its Fifth War Loan quota. Bond Chair John D. Hollyday released final figures July drive closed last Saturday. Total bonds sold 3,172,156.50 with Series E at 357,937.56, under the county’s individual target. Other subscribers include Series F 14, Series G 68, Savings Notes C 35, Certificates of Indebtedness of ’45 21, Notes of 74% 6, Bonds of ’52–’54 45, and Bonds of ’65–’70 92.
The Hagerstown Post Office reports fiscal year receipts ending June 30 totaled 3330,366.38, nearly double the $164,982.98 of 1934. Last year’s receipts rose $49,354.85 from 1943, setting an all time high. Parcel post totals reached 49,426 with 4,422 C C D parcels handled, while staffing remained about the same as the previous year.
On the Caen front British forces hold a solid line along the trans Odon under grey skies. Rommel’s counter assault reports claim heavy German losses with about 50 tanks knocked out and a large SS Grenadier regiment destroyed near Hill 112 Maliot and Lougivney. Hundreds of prisoners were taken. others lay dead or were evacuated after a 24 hour march. One German prisoner said they were promised rest but ordered to seize Hill 112.
Dr Thomas Farran proposed a postwar civilian health program calling for nearly two billion dollars in new hospital construction and federal aid to states for medical care of low income groups The surgeon general of the public health service told a Senate subcommittee that peace time demand for hospital and medical care will exceed anything seen before He said full health services for more than ten million armed forces personnel created a lasting desire for these benefits
Greyhound bus drivers in the area resumed carrying standing passengers after voting to rescind a ban imposed June 22. The move clears the way for War Labor Board processing of a contract dispute. The union said standing riders hinder safe driving while the company called it pressure tactics.
Nine divorces have been filed this month after two new suits docketed today. The cases are Jacob Eckel versus Minnie Eckel and Oscar Henry Bryan Jr. versus Olive May Bryan. Harry Victor Bingaman’s wife Rachel Mary Bingaman was granted a divorce with Calvert K. Hartle appearing.
London July 12. Josef Van Hove a former Antwerp waiter arrived in Britain February 11 posing as a refugee and was executed at Pentonville as a German spy. He was the 16th executed for espionage since the war began. Convicted May 24 he was said to have been sent to obtain Allied invasion plans and to have spied on workers at German airfields in northern France.
The Weather Bureau in Washington predicts cooler weather after tonight and tomorrow following thunderstorms. Temperatures reached 96 yesterday with 72 as the low last night in Keedysville. Baltimore warns drought affects water reserves while Frederick shuts park fountains and operates Linganore pumping at near capacity to meet over 3 million gallons daily.
Two Fairchild plant employees at the Hagerstown Fairgrounds detected smoke in a stable opposite their building. They found a groom asleep on a cot with two horse blankets burning above him. The blaze was extinguished with no injuries or major damage.
A share of Hagerstown Fair stock brought 150 dollars at a public sale before the Court House yesterday. Several other shares were later sold privately at the same price. The 150 dollar price topped recent averages by 50 dollars but was 25 dollars below the 175 dollar top reached recently. Association officials are puzzled by the sudden buyer interest and price rise.
Eleven year old Dick Trumpower of 500 blocks Ridge avenue showed his five dollar bill and was robbed by a youth about seventeen who wore a cap with HI. Dick reported the theft and police are pursuing the suspect.
New York July 12. The shortage of popular brands of cigarettes likely will continue until the European war ends, trade sources said today. Factors: tax free cigarettes sent overseas for military stockpiles, tight leaf tobacco inventories in warehouses, and a growing shortage of cases and containers.
Two busloads of inductees, who passed pre induction physicals weeks ago, left City Hall for Baltimore this morning for immediate assignment to Army or Navy. By nightfall they head to training camps. Several are over 28 and not employed in essential industry.
Abner Kaplan acting executive secretary of the Welfare Board says the Washington county public assistance load has leveled off since March after monthly declines since October 1942. He notes the number on old age assist declined, with 744 people receiving aid in October 1942 and lower by March this year.
Moscow and Rome papers feature heavy front page play on President Roosevelt accepting a fourth term. Stars and Stripes gives top makeup to the Roosevelt letter to Democratic Chairman Hannegan, with front page prominence and a 191 word report.
London reports show some of the flying bombs now glide in long silent arcs. A bomb hit a house this morning, killing an occupant, described as almost feather like. Southern England saw continued raids with casualties and damage, while four coastal evacuation areas reopened in southwest England.
Sel Marvin G Jones a Liberator bomber turret gunner and husband of Mrs Gladys Jones of 89 Mitchell Avenue is missing in action over Austria. He is the son of Mrs Blanche Jones of 452 North Prospect Street. A 1939 Hagerstown High School graduate he worked at North American Cement Corp plant in Security before enlisting in 1942. He trained as a gunner in Tennessee California and Utah before going overseas. War Department telegrams say he went missing on June 26 during a raid over Austria.
Pvt. Kenneth P. Knight, a former Kansas City baseball player, recounted at McClosky General Hospital in Temple, Texas, that German troops hanged Allied paratroopers by their feet with heads severed, and one body displayed with a helmet bearing a wife’s photo. He said he bayoneted three Germans during the initial combat after landings.
County Agent Mark Miller warned Dr. T B Symons that without rainfall before week’s end Washington County faces conditions close to last year. The second alfalfa crop will be short, pastures and hayfields aren’t growing, but there is hope for the corn if timely rain arrives.
Moscow dispatch reports Red Army making deep advances toward East Prussia from near Alytus and Kaunas, penetrating the Baltic front and threatening Bialystok and Grodno. German broadcasts claim retreats along the central front while air supply supports Wilno.
Ankara reports ongoing conversations among Turkey Russia and Britain that could bring Turkish participation in the war by summer end. Talks involving Soviet and British ambassadors and Turkish premier Sukru Saracoglu pick up where Cairo talks left Turkey’s UN position undefined. The United States has been fully informed of the successive steps.
An electric refrigerator exploded in the kitchen of C. E. Wade's home on View Street at 1 30 yesterday morning. Firemen arrived to control a blaze that damaged the kitchen and furnishings. witnesses said the blast was heard nearby. No definite cause is known.
The Post Office Department announces resumption of civilian mail between LT. S. and the City of Rome effective today through Postmaster Thomas M. Simpson. The order covers Vatican City State only, excludes other parts of the province, allows only personal correspondence, and restricts to letters up to two ounces with censorship.
Robert Dukes, colored, arrested for carrying concealed weapons, was tried before Magistrate Harry E. Snyder in city court this morning. He was fined $54 and costs and appealed. Wolfe and Rohrer testified to arresting Duke and finding a .22 caliber revolver in a trouser pocket. Duke claimed the gun was sent to a gunsmith for repairs.
Thomas Bittle, chief clerk of the Washington County War Price and Rationing Board, said rationing would be necessary for some time after the war as food supplies to Europe require careful allotment. He praised Hagere Triangle Grocers Association’s cooperation with ceiling prices and OPA rationing rules, noting about 75 members attended the monthly meeting.
President Alfonso Lopez was freed last night after rebels seized Pasto in southern Colombia. Lt. Cel Dingener Gil led the uprising, reportedly fled the country, and Vice President Dario Echandia assumed powers temporarily as the government announced the situation normal across Colombia.
