Viet Cong Says Fall in Fighting Is Only Stage Set For Offensive

In Vietnam, no major ground fighting was reported as 24 major attacks occurred and the first American troop unit pulled out. Viet Cong deputy foreign minister Le Giang Chanh warned the lull is a prelude to a more violent offensive, saying the United States will be pressured to recognize the Viet Cong as the true representatives of the South Vietnamese people.

Wife appeals to Castro for child custody in hijacking case

In Havana the estranged wife Deanne Washington appeals directly to Fidel Castro for custody of her 1 year old daughter Jennifer. She had telegraphed Castro earlier as husband Thomas George Washington refused to relinquish the child. Washington, a 27 year old African American chemist, hijacked a Delta Airlines DC-9 flight last December to Miami claiming it was a mercy mission for his daughter. He says he sought life in Cuba. the child attends a state school and speaks Spanish while Washington works at the Cuban Academy of Sciences. He was detained for 30 days after arrival and describes his treatment as good but limited.
