The local office handles eligibility pensions, death pensions, burials, National Service Insurance, and many other veterans rights, with staff acting to intercede with federal and state agencies. A 31-year-old Charles Sprankle was attacked first block Wise Street Saturday night. He lost his pocketbook and $20, and suffered a facial wound requiring two stitches. Sprankle, of North Locust Street, identified one assailant. he was taken to county hospital for possible jaw fracture.
Sgt Alvin York, World War I hero, is hospitalized with pneumonia in Pall Mall Tennessee. Mrs York reported he was confined to bed Friday after several weeks of illness but his condition improved yesterday. York is famed for capturing 132 Germans and receiving the Medal of Honor and Croix de Guerre.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate George P. Mahoney names Mrs M. Alice Canoes former Democratic National Committeewoman as head of the Women's Division. Water W. Hamill is named chairman of the Mahoney for Governor Veterans Committee. Winmill, Army veteran from 1942, rises through veterans groups to state legislative and civic posts. Mrs Gandes long-serving president of the 26th Ward club is noted.
Very limited activity appeared in old wheat on the Baltimore market last week. No. 2 red winter garlicky wheat fell about six cents per bushel while new wheat began arriving from Virginia. Yellow corn rose roughly three cents per bushel in No 2 yellow shelled corn and about two cents in ear corn. Barley held steady to firm with Western Maryland prices at $1.89 for wheat, $1.80 for corn on cob, and 68½ cents for barley. The Baltimore millfeed market strengthened with standard middlings up $3.27 per ton, standard bran up $1.88, oilseed meals up $2.33, and dehydrated alfalfa meal down $4.98 per ton.
City detectives bought sixty cents worth of caps for cap pistols at Hil s Toy & Novelty Store Saturday night and arrested proprietor James Hill 1525 Hamilton Boulevard awaiting a July 22 hearing before Magistrate Martin V Bostetter. Police investigate other stores selling fireworks and note violations of state law. A Waynesboro man Sheldon King 28 was arrested for discharging fireworks.
