British chief in the Mediterranean and now allied high command says torpedo planes and attack craft from Malta last fall sank up to half of all Axis supply ships bound for Rommel in Libya. German high command responded with drastic counter measures. Continued on Page 16.
The Washington county ration board announced July tire allocations showing 21 new passenger tires and reduced supplies of recaps and tubes from June. Officials warned demand from physicians and clergymen exceeds the July allotment and urged strict tire conservation. No No 2 grade new tires for defense workers will be available after July 15.
Police probe the death of Emma Jane Brown 82 found with head injuries in her Waynesboro cellar. An inquest is set for Friday. Her pocketbook was missing from the usual drawer. She was last seen Sunday night by her brother D A Lowry junk dealer who found her body at the cellar steps after returning home. Autopsy notes skull fractures brain injuries and intracranial hemorrhage.
Hazel V. Sine is granted an absolute divorce from George P. Sine by Judge Joseph D. Mish. Attorney J. Alten represented Hazel V. Sine in the proceeding.
Federal auto stamp sales neared 10 500 by noon, about 75 percent of the estimated 13 500 vehicle owners in the city. Postmaster Thomas M. Simpson said sales were gratifying and expected another 500 or more to be sold today. The deadline was last midnight for those who planned to raise their vehicles, and stamp purchase is compulsory only if the vehicle is in use.
Banks offices stores city hall and most enterprises close Saturday for Independence Day. Exceptions are few groceries and confectioners. Barbershops close. No community observance planned. Gas and tire rationing may cut travel. Drive under forty miles per hour and plan to have gas to return Sunday. Ration board and unemployment offices close July 4. Claimants urged to file Friday or Monday.
MOSCOW July 1 The Red Army reported German attempts to launch a new offensive near Gzhatsk were frustrated by powerful counterattacks. The seventh German infantry regiment reportedly lost over 2,500 men as Russians held their positions. Counterattacks on Kursk front reportedly smashed whole Nazi units, with German losses including hundreds of tanks. Southward, Sevastopol defenders, facing an Axis force estimated at 225,000 men, repelled fresh assaults as mechanized and foot troops clashed on the Kursk front between Kharkov and Moscow. Marshal Timoshenko's legions were cited as driving continued operations.
Washington county retires 99000 in bonds and pays 26550 in interest today. The bonds include 86500 in school bonds and 12500 in road bonds, leaving 1070000 in outstanding school bonds and 189700 in road bonds. The county boasts the lowest bonded indebtedness in the state for its size and wealth.
June marked a bustling month for local real estate with a record 299 deeds and mortgages filed, up from 209 the prior June. For the first half of the year 1627 filings compared with 1246 last year, while marriage licenses dropped to 314 in June from 570 in 1941, totaling 1727 for the six months vs 1485 last year.
Kenneth L. Mason a four year old resident of 1024 Main avenue suffered a fractured arm in a fall at home and was admitted to the local hospital. Thomas Brast Tears a 48 year old of 921 South Locust street was admitted after an arm injury from a fall at Western Maryland Railroad where he is employed.
Britain’s war production minister Oliver Lyttleton and former minister Beaverbrook dismissed claims that shortages caused North Africa defeats. Lyttleton said six pounder guns tanks and dive bombers were being produced and would outpace the enemy. Beaverbrook insisted Britain had more desert tanks than Germany and Italy and praised the 3.7 inch anti aircraft gun.
In what may be the worst beetle invasion since their arrival, Hagerstown reports swarms in the western city area and numerous rose gardens and vegetable patches. Beetle trap renters have increased counts, with state and county efforts exceeding 2,000 traps already deployed.
The Board of Education announced registration for defense training of male colored workers to be held Friday at 7 p m at North Street School. Classes will start immediately in sheet metal and aluminium welding, with Fairchild Corp stating local recruitment only from the immediate area for those who complete the registration.
Daniel Devonshire, 28, formerly of Martinsburg, was sentenced to four months in the House of Correction by Magistrate Harry E. B. Snyder for stealing a suit from Charles Manuel. The sentence was suspended on the promise to return across the Potomac, with police stating the item was pawned.
John B. Brent Huyett filed for the Democratic nomination for sheriff this morning. The well known county party worker announced his candidacy months ago. Beaver Creek merchant Charles EZ Newcomer also filed for the Republican sheriff nomination and began an intensive campaign. The Board of Election Supervisors said blank candidacy certificates are available at the courthouse basement office.
German radio reportsMt Etna eruptions opened five vents today lava flowing for a mile over uncultivated land. The broadcast cites Italian reports. Also the Navy announced a small Panamanian merchant ship was torpedoed off the Atlantic Coast with survivors landing at an East Coast port.
Maryland Public Service Commission faced protests from defense workers and unlicensed bus operators over transport to Western Maryland defense plants. P H Noland, a licensed operator, warned he may withdraw service and seek a tax refund if the situation with unlicensed buses continues. He cited lower fares by unlicensed operators as a reason for financial strain.
General Boselaw Wieniawa-Dlugorzewski, Polish ambassador to Italy before Germany's assault on Poland in 1939, leaped from a Riverside Drive roof in pajamas. The 65-year-old former envoy, who had recently been named ambassador to Cuba for the Polish government in exile, was found dead in a nearby vacant lot by detectives.
In Hagerstown and Washington County, 1602 cards were received from the 18 year old registration. The procedure differs for teens likely to avoid military service this year. Cards are filed by age group from January 1 1922 to June 30 1924. The fifth registration will be called.
Harry E. Keedy, County Treasurer, announced he will not run for the Republican nomination to succeed himself. He plans to retire April 1 after two terms, saying two terms are sufficient. The field for the nomination may widen with Hush K. Troxell and County Clerk J. R. Black among likely contenders.
Postmaster Thomas M. Simpson announced that Washington orders require Saturday service with no interruption for war program work. Regular Saturday operations will run at all post offices on July 4, except rural delivery, with windows open 8 a m to 1 p m and one full city delivery in the local post office.
London reports hint that the Suez waterway could be destroyed by British action if German forces reach the Red Sea. Alexandria is described as a well defended base though Britain could still operate from Port Said Haifa and possibly Beirut. A Rommel capture of Alexandria would strike a heavy naval blow to Egypt.
General Sir Claude Auchinleck in an order of the day declared the battle is not over and will not end until the enemy is defeated. Rommel's armored spearheads pressed toward Alexandria as units moved east of El Daba, about 100 miles from the city. Auchinleck now leads the desert battle to save Egypt.

A final decision on consolidating eleven or twelve county schools will be made next Tuesday July 7 at the Board of Education monthly meeting. The plan, proposed a month ago after a community survey and transport review, requires no additional transportation equipment. consolidations aim to save costs and improve schooling and social contacts for moved students. Meanwhile Berlin reports from German broadcasts say 150 enemy ships totalling 386 009 tons were sunk in June.
From London July 1 AP the Axis armored army press toward Britain's Mediterranean bastion 65 miles from Alexandria forcing a race to El Alamein as Rommel seeks room to maneuver behind the Quattara Depression. The report notes no independent confirmation and suggests British forces may still operate west of the advancing lines.
A London military commentator says Japan is concentrating air and land forces at the Manchukuo border and appears to be preparing to attack Russia. He cautions that preparations may not be complete or imminent despite a northward force drift and notes Tokyo bombing by U S airmen on April 18 had a large moral impact.
A Tokyo broadcast claims Tepayuse troops have completed seizure of the strategic 450 mile Chekiane Kianesi railway into China. Domei dispatches report Japanese columns advancing from east and west met at Hengteng after defeating Chinese forces entrenched on a height west of the town.
J Carlton Ward Jr president of Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corp says Alvin P Adams of Buramoid Aircraft Corp and Harold H Badds of Ranger Aircraft Engine Division are elected as directors. Adams previously led Datamold and West Farm Air Express. Budds led Briggs Manufacturing in Detroit and becomes board member.
