A Soviet civil aviation stratosphere balloon named Osovakhiam reached 20,600 meters 67,585 feet near Moscow at 11:59 a m Moscow time. Descent began as visibility was poor and search planes moved to locate the crew. The attempt aims to beat 62,304 feet set by Stratostat U. S. S. R.
Washington County's Home for the Poor at Bellevue ran at 107 per inmate daily in 1933. Total maintenance was 12,284.61, a possible new low while daily inmate average reached 115, a high mark. In Tampa area an angry mob fatally assaulted Robert Johnson after a deputy constable abducted him from the city jail during an attempted transfer over alleged contact with a white woman. Johnson was identified as the victim and authorities reported multiple cars followed the transport. Police detained him Sunday.
Receivers of the United Railways and Electric Company in Baltimore announce that reduced fares caused heavy daily losses and will return to the old flat rate of ten cents on Thursday. January offered two fares for 15 cents.
Aldine Lakin chairs a new Industries Committee named by the Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce board to attract relocating factories. Wallace Caum and C Merritt Campbell join as members. The chamber notes many firms seek quarters rather than new buildings, but several new industries have located here, boosting employment.
Philadelphia January 30 Joseph B Eastman Federal rail coordinator warned railroad managements that if they do not change he will seek Congress to ban any control of company unions He said under the Emergency Transport and National Industrial Recovery acts that company unions are not outlawed but must be fully free and independent from managers A company minion must not be a kept union to preserve labor privileges.
Clyde Beatty faced a lethal incident as Sammy the lion killed Bessie during a training session. Beatty described a harsh post fight routine in which four lions including brothers Leo and King were used to discipline Sammy. Sammy continued performing in the show despite the incident.
Arraigned before Justice Richard Duffey in city court. George W. Vincent, 50, wounded and captured at the Coca Cola Bottling Company plant, jailed on breaking and entering the plant office. He claimed Philadelphia as home and said he met A. J. Jones, 36, New York, recently during the alleged crime. Fingerprints and photos sent to the Federal Identification Bureau as police doubt his identity and suspect he may be wanted elsewhere.
Rev George W Kerstetter of Funkstown was elected president of the Maryland Classis of the Reformed Church at the 114th annual session in Westminster. Harry Brindle was named vice president, with representation from Carroll Frederick and Washington counties. Roy Wasson faced $300 bond after being charged with theft of brass and other items from the Bester Concrete Block plant. he appeared before Justice Richard H Sweeney in city court.

President Roosevelt is to sign the dollar devaluation bill at 3 30 p m Eastern Time and move to seize the nation's gold supply. He will establish a stabilization fund, place gold under Treasury control, and set the new dollar value between 50 and 60 percent of its prior gold content.

A mother and father and their two children were burned to death in a Maryland bungalow in a house fire blamed on an overheated stove. The victims were Leslie McDanies 27 Viola 27 Carroll 5 and Franklin 4 months. Neighbors watched as volunteers fought the blaze and found water from a hydrant frozen and engines unable to check the fire.
In Washington on January 30 Albert F. Goetze of Baltimore urged that the pork processing tax harms the packing industry and pushes firms toward failure. Secretary Wallace replied that retail meat prices have risen 20 percent since last year and that surveys show the tax is passed to consumers, not borne by the industry. He cited W. W. Woods of the Institute of American Meat Packers and noted no signs of impending bankruptcy from dividend checks.
