Rescue crews from Wood Island saving station and coast guard men saved all 45 officers and men from the stranded U S submarine S 48 off Little Harbor Portsmouth New Hampshire in a blinding snowstorm and northeast gale. A skeleton crew of 20 remained aboard as tugs and naval ships stood by ready to tow the boat to the Portsmouth Navy Yard.

New York January 30 Gaston B Means detective and Thomas B Felder life lawyer were found guilty of conspiracy to bribe government officials in a sealed verdict returned today in United States district court. The jury recommended extreme clemency for Felder. Means was sentenced to two years in the Atlanta Ga penitentiary and a $10000 fine. Felder was fined $10000 but received no prison term.
