Helsinki reports fierce Soviet assaults against Finnish lines northeast of Lake Ladoga repelled with no gains. Russian attempts to storm Fort Mantsi on the lake’s east coast failed as heavy artillery and snowbound battlefields left Russian dead scattered. The army communique said Finnish positions remained holding under almost unremitting pressure.
Dr W J Johnson 56 year old superintendent at the San Antonio State Hospital for the Insane faced charges of immoral conduct. Five former staffers testified he made improper advances claiming he kissed Miss Ruby Benton to keep her job. Johnson denied the accusations calling them false and slanderous amid a board hearing.
A debris-filled blast at the Irlam Lancashire power station cut off electricity to Irlam and Cadishead with the roof blown off the 60 by 45 foot building. Fire followed the explosion and power to the Lancashire Steel Corporation plant was shut off indefinitely. Police cite possible faulty electrical apparatus, with no casualties reported.
U. S. Weather Bureau reports generally fair conditions in the east and central parts of Maryland with light local snows in the extreme west tonight and Saturday. Cold continues tonight through Saturday with a slow rise in temperature Sunday and Monday. Chesapeake Bay remains partly cloudy and cold, with lows around ten degrees in the north and ten to fifteen degrees in the south tonight and Saturday night, winds mostly northwest gentle to moderate.
London reports that German submarine production had reached one per day and that the Reich launched several new plane carriers. Berlin would not comment on the plane carrier reports, but a Berlin source said submarine production would rise quickly as crews train.

In Rome on January 26, Fascist party secretary Ettore Muti ordered former Vice Secretary Vincenzo Zangara expelled for unworthiness. Zangara’s brother Ignazio was also expelled. Zangara had been removed last October after Muti became secretary. Muti also expelled eight other Fascists for immorality.
James R. Young of International News Service has been detained since Sunday and is now under daily questioning at Tokyo metropolitan police headquarters. He has been denied visitors as the Foreign Office says it has no knowledge of the case.
All vessels were warned to avoid Upper Chesapeake Bay today due to heavy ice. The advisory affects ships and local maritime operations, urging caution for crews and harbor facilities along the bay. Authorities issued the alert as freezing conditions persisted across the waterway.
In Philadelphia, Jan 26, Emil Gardia, 44, says he quarreled with Joseph Gallagher, 60, who sang the Beer Barrel Polka for hours before dying from a slit throat. Hides and poultry reported stolen from Reed and Rohrer residences. Arrests were made by the Sheriff’s Office and Constable Frank Winters.
In city court Magistrate Harry E. Snyder fined 19-year-old Thomas Gillian $100 and costs for driving after his license was refused. He had a prior October accident and was arrested for driving without a license. after a November license refusal he persisted, leading to another near-miss with an accident as City Officer S. Basore rounded him up.
