Fourteen refugees drowned when a rescue barge capsized in Paducah Kentucky as floodwaters inundated the city. Survivors swam to nearby buildings to reach safety amid fears of gasoline sparking fires. Red Cross officials reported the accident and said details were scarce.
Potomac River flood waters continue to fall with six feet above normal this morning at the Williamsport power plant. Upstream reports indicate a general recession and Cumberland notes about six inches of rain in January, totaling nearly twice the average. Clear weather today aided a further drop.
Washington County Red Cross chapter reports its $2000 goal reached as flood emergency needs grow. Fund booths in the Hotel Alexander lobby and Herald Mail office will stay open another day or two. County quota was $1000 before a telegram from Admiral Grayson urged extension.

Red Cross seeks 4 million. Army troops assist in Kentucky cities. relief efforts extend nationwide.
The Roxbury penal farm in the county is set to receive a sizable portion of a $5,092,000 state construction loan. An allotment of $1,500,000 will fund permanent stone quarters for inmates as part of an expanded program to employ prisoners in state manufacture. Maryland penitentiary gets $150,000 and the House of Correction $109,000 to support prison labor and space expansion.
The Pennsylvania Railroad announces it will transport food clothing and medical supplies free to the flood area. The movement will continue for 18 days and shipments are consigned to the American Red Cross. Notice was received at local offices.
In Baton Rouge on January 26, Richard Collins a Black prisoner captured in Jackson Mississippi spoke to Sheriff T H Martin claiming politics caused his 1920s Angola escape. He said changes in state administrations in 1928 led him to flee thinking new officials might mistreat him.
Indications emerge that counties may drop plans to win back county highway control from the state. The Highway Planning Survey, whose first results will be reviewed by the legislature, accompanies shifting views. Western Shore counties favored return last July, but a Frederick meeting with Eastern Shore reps showed little interest. Since then opinions have changed in many areas as the State Roads Commission weighs the issue.
Maryland lawmakers opened a study on a 101 million dollar two year request tied to the governor's budget. The plan includes 70.6 million for two years, a contingent 9.98 million if revenue targets meet, and a 5.092 million bond issue. Relief needs total 16 million with proposed tax measures across income, cigarettes, utilities, beverages, medicines, and gambling related items.

The State Roads Commission and the Soil Erosion Service have signed a contract for joint supervision of erosion control along state highway rights of way in Washington County. The Service will handle surveys planning and construction supervision while the Roads Commission supplies maps plans materials machinery and wider rights of way. Slopes will be stabilized drained and planted to prevent erosion along selected cuts and fills.
Pittsburgh police found Charles A Wunderly 67 year old art dealer dead on a sidewalk near his home. His wallet and gold chain were missing. Homicide detectives believe he was robbed after death from heart disease. Wunderly had long heart disease history. his widow two sons and two daughters survive.
Frank McCarney aged 38 of 600 North Locust Street received a suspended sentence in city court after conviction for stealing meat and cheese from Frank J D Martins store near Middleburg. Co defendants John Everly, Joan Weaver and Max Marshall were acquitted. McCarney promised restitution, stating he has work and family to support.
Senator J Allan Coad chairman of the finance committee in Maryland opposed the ongoing diversion of highway revenue into general funds. He spoke after Governor Nice submitted a biennial budget proposing about 4 million dollars yearly be diverted from highway revenue. Coad urged returning designated road funds to the State Roads commission.
Robert Harsh of Ringgold reports seeing the first robin on a farm in that area yesterday. Robins as spring indicators have lost their traditional status in recent years.
Nine Maryland State policemen in two radio ambulances and a supply truck depart Baltimore for Louisville to assist flood rescue work. Under Lt. Andrew T. Conner they carry blankets and supplies and will arrive tonight if highways permit. Governor Harry W. Nice ordered the aid after broadcast appeals from the flood area.
General Motors Corp announces distribution to its employees of about 10.7 million dollars from the employees savings and investment plan class of 1921. Of this total 4.2 million represents employee contributions and 6.5 million is GM’s. Each participant who paid $100 during 1931 will receive 256 dollars. Some disbursement will be in cash and some in GM stock. Four more classes mature ending with 1935. The plan ends with the 1935 class after adoption of the Social Security act. Alfred P Sloan says the aim is to aid workers amid a strike and high unemployment.

Tens of thousands flee as levees fail to contain rising waters over a million acres, with hundreds of thousands homeless and cities evacuated across several states. President Roosevelt pledges rapid relief funding while Red Cross appeals grow. Army troops move into Louisville to enforce security measures.
In Huntington West Virginia rising Ohio River floodwaters forced police to evacuate the jail and move equipment to higher floors as the water deepened around the water plant. Businesses theaters and groceries closed while residents fled as the river surpassed 1913 levels and continued to rise.
Washington January 26 The White House is empty of children for the first time in over a month. Eleanor and Curtis Dail, the President's grandchildren, have left for Seattle where their mother Anna Roosevelt Boettiger recently moved. James Roosevelt children remain in Washington, in their own home.
City Democrats set a 8 pm mayoral nomination convention at the Democratic Club in the Grice building. They will adopt a platform, launch a vigorous campaign, elect ward five-member committees and a city committee, with voting limited to ward delegations. Richard Duffey will preside as city committee chair. Five city council candidates, nominated last Friday, will be introduced.
The Pennsylvania railroad shipped 40 ten gallon tanks of drinking water from Chicago today for flood refugees in Cincinnati Ohio and Jeffersonville Indiana. City firemen pumped the water into four tank cars three of which were sent to Cincinnati. The cars were then coupled to a passenger train.
Hollywood actress Evelyn Prentiss files a divorce suit alleging her husband Earl Cook struck her on their first wedding anniversary. The complaint says the incident happened January 20, 1935, in Grand Rapids Michigan.
Edward Waters of Security reports the theft of his 1936 Terraplane automobile from in front of the Park Circle Inn at 1 o clock this morning, with police notified.
