Cows Sold for a Dime Amid Farmer Foreclosure Fears

In Des Moines Iowa farmers resisted foreclosures by bidding cows at a dime to satisfy a judgment. The sale followed renewed efforts to forestall mortgage foreclosures and pressure legislative relief. George Rosander of Perry Iowa saw his cow sold and later reclaimed by farmers who bid it back.

Farmers Attend Auctions Amid Mortgage Crises Across States

A $2,500 judgment yielded only $45.05 for mortgagees at yesterday’s sale. About 1,500 farmers attended, with horses selling for 16 cents and a tractor for $1.50. In Nebraska 4,000 farmers gathered at J. H. Bends farm near Stanton to gain postponement of a sale of credits on John Reynold’s bankrupt renter. In Iowa 200 farmers watched Max Leu’s farm sale, the insurer’s bid of $20,100 freeing Leu from encumbrance. Wisconsin county attorney Harold Dakin issued warrants against 11 farmers for alleged mortgage foreclosure prevention, threatening prosecution despite death threats from Iowa and Georgia.
