An association in Sharpsburg forms to develop a memorial for WWI and WWII dead. Joseph Neikirk chairs, Ronald Otto vice chairs, with officers and representatives from five churches and civic groups. A community fund-raising fair runs February 21 28 at the Community Hall, with Grafton Smith as general manager and Henry Poffenberger leading card party planning. The memorial type is undecided, aiming for a practical, community-serving tribute.
San Francisco reports juvenile authorities will decide on charges against 19 year old Wallace Wells for contributing to the delinquency of a minor after his five day association with 15 year old pianist Jackie Horner. Superior Judge J L Harris sent the case to Juvenile Court. Jackie testified the sailor was gentlemanly and never touched her during their time together in the city.
Mrs. Bessie Castle of 110 South Locust street reports to police that unknown youths are stealing sections of fencing from around her property, removing pieces piece by piece.
The first Soviet reaction to Bevin's plan for a western European alliance says the aim is to form a western German state with France Belgium the Netherlands and Luxembourg joining. Reactions in Europe were cautious but largely approving in the United States France Italy Belgium Luxembourg and the Netherlands showed varying sympathy while Denmark Sweden and Norway discuss the issue in Oslo.
A fire at the Sulgrave farm laboratory near Charles Town West Virginia destroyed breeding records for about 1,000 purebred Herefords. Damage was estimated at 8000 dollars. Owner R J Funkhouser said duplicate pedigree data are kept in Charles Town offices.

The Shadow, a mysterious weekly tipster, helped police locate Edward Ware a Negro man sought for weeks on a minor charge. A storekeeper received a call from an unknown caller identifying as the Shadow and directing officers to a poolroom where Ware was found. Police will not question the source but welcome the assistance.
Washington January 24 Paul Porter former price control administrator testified before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on the European recovery program forecasting wage and price controls. He warned the Marshall Plan requires temporary allocation controls meat rationing essential credit and rent controls to avert inflation and a collapse that could invite Soviet influence. Porter urged wage stabilization with rising living costs and land stabilization. He cited potential world conflict if a civil war erupts in western Europe and noted the hearing followed Senator George urging transfer of foreign aid control from the State Department.
A special session of the Mayor and Council will be held next week to discuss and possibly approve the fire prevention code drafted by the Fire Prevention Committee. The meeting was set for January 26 at 7 30 p m but may be postponed as several councilmen are out of the city. The proposed code would create a full time paid fire chief with power to inspect and condemn fire hazards and establish a central office at City Hall to coordinate volunteer fire companies in line with recommendations from a recent inspection by fire underwriters.
Walter N. Ruth, former executive vice chairman of the Maryland War Finance Committee, was appointed assistant fuel coordinator for Maryland by Governor Lane. Judge Emory H. Niles, the state fuel coordinator, said Ruth will devote full time to the job.
Duquoin Illinois January 24 Dr. G H Gutridge rushed to the hospital when a gearshift stuck as he backed his car out of the garage. He drove six blocks to the hospital in reverse ensuring timely arrival.
Maryland state roads crews mobilize as a northeast blizzard dumps snow across the state. Washington County sees two inches in hours with 12 plow crews active from Hagerstown to Boonsboro while winds drift highways and temps fall. The 8 to 10 inch forecast looms as Western Maryland recalls a 1936 blizzard and Coast Guard finds it hard to land amid high winds.
State Police scanned Maryland for a two engine Coast Guard plane believed lost in a heavy snowstorm. The aircraft was en route Newark New Jersey to Washington but diverted to Baltimore after unable to land at National Airport. Shell Oil plant Curtis Bay reported hearing a low flying plane around 10 o clock. engines indicated a western course but sound disappeared. A trooper in Rockville reported hearing a plane around 10 a.m. Visibility was zero due to the storm.
Street department employees were told by Street Superintendent Charles W. Stump to prepare for snow removal if the snowfall continues this afternoon. He noted the snow is not deep enough yet but that cinders and sand are being spread at crosswalks and hills while wind complicates sanding. No removal will occur until deeper snow falls.
