Government renews efforts to avert a coal strike

Washington Jan 19 Renewed efforts by the Department of Labor aim to avert a threatened coal strike by 60 090 anthracite miners in the Scranton district. Secretary Davis ordered commissioners Davis and Dewey to join with miner officials and the Pennsylvania State Conciliation Board to seek a settlement. In Wilkes-Barre district plans for a general walkout Wednesday were only part success, with many local unions ignoring orders. Faction leaders expect some mines, especially Lackawanna, to operate, and Wyoming Valley could see a widespread tieup with few exceptions.
