Federal agents shift the manhunt for Charles Mattson’s kidnapper to Southern California after weeks of searching from Washington. Harold Nathan, chief agent, reportedly flew in to direct rapidly mobilized forces in the region.
Two hams two shoulders and two pieces of side meat valued at 25 dollars were taken yesterday from the cellar of Mrs Emma Barr at 115 Elizabeth Street. A man seen entering the cellar was detained and given ten days in jail on a drunk charge. Police will probe any link to the robbery.
Superintendent B J Grimes announced there will be no public school holiday here on Inauguration Day. Some nearby towns near Washington will close schools for the day, but Washington County is considered too far away to justify a system-wide closing.
Justice John D. Dunn this morning sentenced Edward Hoffman, 34, to thirty days in Washington County jail on a drunkenness charge, remarking that a jail term would do him a lot of good.

Two midshipmen at Annapolis were dismissed from the Naval Academy and Navy for marrying during Christmas leave in violation of regulations. Midshipman George Hails Foster of Montgomery Alabama wed Mary Helen Scott of Bessemer Alabama on December 29, and Midshipman Ambrose Gloshen Witters of Milroy Indiana wed Edythe Marie Bigham of Batesville Indiana on December 31. Both were in the class to graduate in June. regulations prohibit marriage and call for dismissal.

The Potomac river slowly rose this morning at about a tenth of a foot per hour after receding last week. At 9 a.m. it stood three feet above normal with weekend precipitation totaling .79 inches and January rainfall at 2.14 inches. Yesterday’s rainfall was .39 inches and last night .40 inches. temperatures ranged from 29 to 35 degrees, with 32 at sundown and 31 today. Cumberland noted the river was 12 feet below flood stage and six feet below this year’s high.
Barry E Hartle of Chewsville and friends veered off near Hopewell at about 11 PM when his Plymouth struck a parked Ford V S sedan. A girl passenger suffered a slight injury and was taken home. Both vehicles were badly damaged as Hartle blamed being crowded from the road by an approaching car.

Des Moines report notes Max the Martlins dog left Denver after moving last November. He traveled 750 miles in 47 days to Des Moines, arriving exhausted and sleeping in the yard of former neighbor Mrs. Stanley C. Wilmore. She plans to send him back by express and hopes he adapts to Denver.

Knudsen and other GM leaders met UAW strikers at the Fisher Body plants in Flint, with GM insisting sit down strikers remain removed before any settlement talks. The strike board asserted that violations by the corporation require continued sit down actions until the dispute is resolved.

The child’s foster parents, Mr and Mrs Sleighter, reported she left just before the bus appeared on the V path from the Sleighter home.
Flord Dayhoff aged 35 of Summit avenue suffered a broken leg when a heavy metal plate slipped and fell on him at the Western Maryland freight station on Hood street Saturday. He was removed to the hospital for treatment.
Postmaster Jacob T. Hartle says a field Social Security office will open in the Grand Building on West Washington Street within a week. Similar offices will follow in Annapolis Cumberland and Salisbury to maintain wage records and support social security accounts. A temporary stall from civil service lists will house the local operation as furniture and equipment have arrived.
Washington county authorities jailed Henry Flannagan, 35, as they investigated the death of his 77 year old father Abraham Lincoln Flanagan who was found fatally injured beside a railroad track. The elder man died after a hospital autopsy cited shock from bodily injuries aggravated by exposure. The father and son were last seen together Saturday evening, Sheriff J P Woodward said.
Los Angeles January 18 The Newhall Pass area uranium and radium ore deposits could have disrupted radio guidance and aircraft communications, potentially causing two fatal crashes that killed 15 people including Martin Johnson. Mining engineer Charles Stanley notes planes crashed near Burbank airport after flying over the ore rich hills, tying the incidents to strong radioactivity and possible beam interference.
The burglar who invaded the Martin Menke home in Pensacola on January 18 stole whisky and wine, all groceries including steak turkey and eggs, jewelry, and several hundred dollars in clothing plus the week’s laundry.

SHANGHAT, Jan. 18. The death sentence for Atma Singh, a Sikh member of the British police, was commuted to life imprisonment. The rope broke at the gallows, saving him, and the British embassy announced the commute. He will die in a jail in native India. Officials said his neck stretched two inches during the attempt and he was recovering from minor injuries as the rope severed. His case raised questions for British authorities after the Dec. 29 incident.
Nine men were called to trial on mail fraud charges in Milwaukee accused by postal inspectors of running a nationwide fake eye doctor ring. The scheme duped farmers and widows with genuine or imagined eye ailments, yielding about 31 million annually over two decades. Guelph Ont Jan 18 Canadian Press police and guards hunted 35 missing convicts after a nine hour riot at Ontario Reformatory. More than 100 prisoners fled into Guelph and surrounding grounds were secured by reinforcements. The outbreak caused at least three injuries and about 200000 in damage.
