A three story Graystone Hotel fire in downtown Watertown killed three people and injured five others. William Mullen Eugene Godfrey Samuel Poole died at Mercy Hospital Joseph Kling is in serious condition Clarence Kandrew treated for shock. Twenty seven guests occupied the brick and wood hotel known as City Hotel. Firefighters prevented spread to the Crowner Hotel as the roof collapsed to the third floor after about an hour.

First Disabled Vet Enlisted Under Eisenhower Plan
Alfred M. Sanesi of Washington County becomes the first disabled World War II veteran to enlist under the Eisenhower plan to recruit 5,000 disabled vets for special training. Firecracker Trouble Blamed on Neighborhood Cowboys
Residents along North Cannon Avenue and Jefferson Street blamed "drug store cowboys" for setting off fire crackers aerial bombs and torpedoes on a Wednesday evening at the street intersection. Youth Drinks Acid At Grandparents Home
Fred L. Robinson Jr., 14, of Mercersburg, drank battery acid from a pop bottle at grandparents’ home.
