Edmund Foster and daughter visit in Cumberland while Miss Mary Boultman returns from Detroit with Kingsley Noel. Families move homeward to New Jersey and Emmitsburg. many illnesses noted including pneumonia improvements and grippe.
Henry Kyd Douglas chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will hold an open meeting at the Hotel Hamilton on Thursday evening January 19 beginning at 8 o'clock. Rev Dr William St Hess pastor of the Presbyterian church will be the speaker. A musical program is arranged by committee headed by Miss Winifred Campbell Miss Rachel Shulenberger and Mrs Robert A Stott.

A special lecture on Modern Painting will be given at the Art Museum on Sunday at 3 30 by Richard Carl Medford acting director. Lantern slides will illustrate the talk in the Lecture Hall, tied to Modern American Art shown by the Art Students League of New York staff. Children aged 6 to 14 are invited to a Saturday Story Hour and drawing class.
Hagerstown Chapter of the Order of De Molay will attend the evening service at St John’s Lutheran church as a body. They will meet at the Masonic Temple at 7 15 o clock and proceed to the church.
Mary Garden, formerly of the Chicago Civic Opera, signs to appear in Loew circuit 4 a day vaudeville. She will debut in Washington January 20 and perform in New York the next week singing classic folk songs. Meanwhile Addie Baker of Strasburg Ohio died of a heart attack after a pig squeal frightened her.
The Luther League offers devotional programs at three churches led by officers to be installed at Trinity. Fred Mowen becomes president with Catherine Schnebly as vice president and Edna Mowen as treasurer. St John and St Mark host talks and fellowship with speakers Fred Entler and Richard Schlotterbeck as leaders. St John’s leads in a November-December membership drive with 60 percent gain, followed by St Mark’s 50 percent. St John’s pennant awarded for one year.
A pleasant serenade evening honored Mr. and Mrs. Sloan Diaz at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred N. Griffiths in Mt. Briar. Attendees included many neighbors and relatives such as Miss Orpha Griffith and David Griffiths, with a later dinner hosted by Mrs. Diaz’s grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Griffith.
The Clearspring Homemakers Club met in the library chaired by Mrs. Foster. Members reviewed the current events roll call and voted to sponsor the LeGrange musical on Saturday night January 21 at 7 30 in the town hall. The program will feature novel musical numbers and humorous readings with instruments including shrill rylophone accordion marimba saxophone organ chimes.
Ruth Cowan notes that the 1933 Century of Progress foresees women participating shoulder to shoulder with men in exhibits across science culture industry and engineering. She highlights the shift from a separate woman's building in 1893 to broad female leadership and participation in planning social, horticulture arts and science groups.

Mrs. F. M. Fuller hosted a bridge luncheon at her home at 940 the Ter race yesterday afternoon. Guests included Mrs. R. W. Parks, Mrs. F. M. Aday, Mrs. Ed win C. Hook, Mrs. F. H. Robertson, Mrs. Roger Cook, Mrs. James Russell, Mrs. W. C. Vedder and Mrs. Ben Reed. Prizes went to Mrs. Reed and Mrs. Robertson. Mrs. Fuller plans another similar party next week.
A large audience attended the first Shamrock Frolic staged by the Shamrock Soccer Club at Williamsport High School auditorium. Proceeds were to fund soccer equipment. The program featured William H. Bradley and the Fearnow brothers plus the Shamrock quartet and other acts, ending with a finale featuring the Shamrock quartet and the Fearnow brothers.

Miss Caroline Shriver was installed as worthy matron and Contle Russell as worthy patron at the Queen Esther Chapter No. 3 eastern star installation in the Masonic Temple last evening. Also installed were officers including Miriam Fiery and George Buys as associate patrons, Grace Middlekauff as secretary, Mamie Lowman as treasurer, Blanche Schwinger as conductress, Margaret McDaniels as associate conductress, Flora Miller as chaplain, Fern Lambiloite as marshal, Mary Saxton as ac companion, Ruth Morin as Ruth, Helen Grove as Martha, Edna Russell as Electa, Edna Bell as warder, and Mary E. Cosens as sentinel. Corsages were presented to each officer. Retiring officers were honored with jewels and Kirk silver. A quilt was presented to organist Mrs. Mary Hammond and a reception followed for about one hundred guests. Plans were announced for a chapter dance on February 10 at the Masonic Temple. Nine of the 56 Martus School students from LaPere, Mich., are children of director John Swoishe.
The Hagerstown Community Concert Association brings Leo Jan and Mischel Cherniavsky to Trinity Lutheran Sunday School auditorium Tuesday evening January 17. The three famed virtuosi, violin piano and cello, are praised for their blend and dramatic virtuosity drawing large audiences worldwide.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Markley hosted a turkey dinner at their Mapleville home for the ready-to-wear department em ployes of Letter Brothers on a Thursday evening. Dancing and cards followed a delicious meal with many staff members present.
Guest soloist Merritt Campbell will perform at 11 o clock Sunday morning service. He will sing O God Have Mercy by Menfelssohn at the Church of the Brethren.
