A sad tale from Dewensville pike near Corbett's. 16 year old Charles Eldridge left home with friends to run errands and visit town. His father John Eldridge Sr now searches the area and asks his son to come home, forgiving him for the rift. Charles cooked and assorted chores at home, mother died, and his disappearance unsettles the family.
The funeral of ex Judge John A Fleming occurred at 2 PM from his Williamsport home. Rev M D Gaver and Rev E H Smith led services with Masonic and Odd Fellows members present. Pallbearers included Sheriff S P Angle, W G Icare, Geo W Robinson, James E Shawken, C D Bell, and D C Kemp. Interment followed at Riverview Cemetery.
A Chambersburg Repository note quotes a Hagerstown resident claiming about a thousand vacant houses there. The remark is described as ridiculous, needing no further comment or opinion.

A Harpers Ferry residence owned by W R Peregoy burned down with contents saved. The dwelling valued at 3000 dollars and partly insured.
An early freight on the Cut-off Monday started a grass fire on the Almshouse farm. Supt Deibert and a member battled the blaze, brushing vigorously to stop the flames.
Police reports list two arrests during the week. None of the commissioners met the police.
John Kuhn and Alvey Hart were arrested at homes near Big Spring for robbing the Adams Express at Big Pool on January 6, 1907, with $41 in the package. They were committed for a hearing in Hagerstown. Barnes Wolf faced larceny of a robe from David Hawhecker. Chas Lanshan received two months in jail. A separate case in Williamsport involved a gift-enterprise scandal tied to tickets for a beauty contest, with a watch claimed worth $40 but likely $2.50.

Prof. Fred D of Kee Mar College presents a Shakespearean course at the Free Library starting Thursday at 4 30 PM and continuing weekly through February 20 Richard III is the first topic with papers by Rev. B OH Desk, Prof. Theo Shank, Miss Lillian Barkdoll, and Miss Mavin Jamison.
An earthen jar at the home of the late Mrs. Gatherine Draper was opened to reveal cherries and dates on the jar indicating the fruit was put up twenty three years ago. The cherries remained delicious and intact.
Nomination includes Geo F Burkhart for president with Gav Wm Riley and Frank N Fahrney as vice presidents. Secretaries treasurer and standing committee named. Election Monday night with thanks to Mrs Tara Swarts for hunting and other decorations.
The 47,000 pound monument base, weighing 26 feet high when finished, was unloaded at the WM dock and transported to Leitersburg for Daniel Wolfinger’s Lutheran church graveyard lot. D. J. Shull & Son of Chambersburg built it, with a Frick Co. traction engine guiding the move and a crew ready to set it in place.
Postmaster Representative Dayton recommended Harry H. Mundy of this city for postmaster at Shepherdstown, likely to be appointed. Dayton also recommended reappointment of W. L. Erwin at Harpers Ferry and Alex Clohan at Martinsburg.
Mr George E Stoyer is ill with liver trouble. Judge Stake went to Cumberland today to hold court. Mrs Ellen O Conner, Mrs Mary a, is visiting her daughter, Mrs Pearl, Hilb street. Edward L Smith, clerk in Merchants Hotel, Washington, is there for a few days. Rev J A Hoffheins, Martinsburg, is suffering from nervous indigestion. Mr M D Eakle, Elizabeth street, is on the sick list. Mr and Mrs C W Humrichouse, Springfield, will go to Washington to spend the winter with Senator and Mrs L B McComas. Mrs J A Wishard, Smithsburg, has returned from visiting her daughter, Mrs E C Schock, Philadelphia. Mrs Schock accompanied her mother to Smithsburg, where she will spend ten days.
First full orchestral rehearsal of the Mikado last night produced remarkably good results. A home orchestra replaces Zeigler's of Baltimore this year, handling the entire production with home talent. The session was satisfactory in every respect.
A double birthday celebration was held Saturday at Mr Keedy's home in Keedysville. C M Keedy aged 64 and his granddaughter Mrs Lotte Nibiser aged 28 were honored with the entire family and a few friends in attendance.
A J Zinkand, sick with grippe at home in the West End, reports his first health-related absence in his 3½ years with The Mail office. He holds a five health record and is currently out of work.
The Elks fair at Hose Hall attracts patrons with pretty decorations tasty booths and polite ladies. Supper with each admission is well cooked and appetizing though attendance is light due to cold weather. A special program will be rendered this evening as an additional attraction.
Elgin Tennessee resident A Overstreet recalls his wife nearing death from consumption. Doctors offered little hope until a friend urged Dr King’s New Discovery. Persistent use reportedly saved her life and the medicine is sold at Warreham’s City Pharmacy and The Central Drug Store for 60 cents and 1 dollar.
In executive session this afternoon the County Commissioners plan to protect county interests in the proposed sale of the W. M. railroad. Directors Wm. Updegraff and Davies L. Kenley led the meeting while Washington county holds 324000 of preferred and 110000 of common stock in the road. The board aims to secure favorable terms and maintain harmony with President Hood.
Mrs Elizabeth M Posey widow of Frederick J Posey longtime jeweler in this city died at 7 AM at 233 N Potcoise Street after a period of ill health. She was 85 and a daughter of the late William McCardell. Survived by sisters Isabella Lanson A K Tice John W Stonebraker Virginia Tiedman of Charles Town and Catherine Wise of Peoria. Funeral Thursday at 2 PM at her home.
William Smith, municipal electric light trimmer, was adjusting a lamp along GV track when an engine under Dick Loighbaugh struck the light. The wire fell onto the engine causing a park to ignite. Smith narrowly avoided injury as the lamp shattered.
Jacob Shaw died at Green Spring Furnace from consumption at age 53. He formerly worked on the canal and was a member of the Evangelical church. He leaves five children and a sister Mrs. Emanuel M. Myers and a brother, both of this city. Funeral this morning at Mt. Carmel church.

The State’s Attorney expressed doubt over evidence for trampless arrest, urging proof before convicting and defending fair treatment of the man claiming to seek work. Community remains divided over handling of vagrants and enforcement of begging laws.
Wm. Rush, a tramp, was arrested by Constable Tice and sentenced to two months in the House of Correction by Justice Adams. WF Shoop of Mt. Aetna was found drunk along the Bunkstown pike by Constable Frosh. his wife paid the fine. Policeman Wiesner placed a drunk in custody last night.
While David Izer and Ira Cline were driving a colt near Mount Moriah the animal kicked. Cline jumped from the vehicle and injured his ankle severely, dislocated and fractured. Izer received facial bruises and cuts as the buggy was demolished. Cline was taken to his home near Downs ville.
Confirmation services at St John's P. E. Church in Baltimore were postponed because Bishop Paret is ill with a grin. The services will be rescheduled once he recovers.
The Williamsport town council accepted the resignation of Councilman Samuel Preston who has moved to 10 More, Pa. No appointment was made and his successor will be elected at the annual March election.
Will Start, former stock exchange head, returns from Greencastle to resume work in the Havey, Lane & Co building. Chas H Ludwig named operator with Edgar Bloom succeeding him at the Postal office.

The Farmers Institute of Washington County met Monday afternoon at 1 30 in Court Hall before a fair audience of farmers and fruit growers. W D Amosa presided in the director's absence R A Alvey filled in and introduced speakers B E Van Deman Washington spoke on Ornamentation of Country Homes and Fruits for Family Use. he urged diverse orchard plantings and long fruit rows with horse cultivation and advised buying trees directly from nurserymen. He warned about fruit diseases from airborne germs and shared a spraying recipe of one pound white arsenic and three pounds sal soda in two gallons water boiled 15 minutes. one quart per 50 gallons. H P Miller Sunbury G cave discussed soil fertility.
The will of Alex Henson with a codicil attached was filed in the Orphans Court. Property is placed in trust to Alex Amstrone and Chas HE Henson with rents and profits for life to Alfred Henson, and on his death the trust ends until the nine Jalter children receive the estate.
A gathering at Miss L Blanche Garver’s home in Smithsburg featured games and music. Misses Bessie Mitten and Ruby Spielman led a take walk while Max Newman and John Markell stood out. Miss Mitten won the cake with Mr Newman as the couple. Refreshments followed and the crowd dispersed after a pleasant evening.
Mr J Harry Panec Beckmen and Mise Clara Gertrude Heckman of Fayettville Pa were wed at noon today. The service took place at the parsonage of St Pauls A B Church and was performed by Rev A B Station.

Plaintiffs include John E. Downin attorney for Hazers town residents and several named individuals. case cites alleged noncompliance and missing deposit with the State Treasurer until December 1901.
