Cancer Deaths Tie County October Toll In 1946
Cancer caused ten deaths in Washington county during October 1946 per a State Health Department bulletin. Total October fatalities were 66 in the county, 38 in the city, with heart disease, tuberculosis, syphilis and other ailments accounting for the rest. There were 193 county births and five infant deaths. vendereal diseases led in notifiable cases with 19 gonorrhea and 10 syphilis.

Woman Insists She Is Guilty
Miss Emma B. Hurst aged 29 of Ephrat a pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of Sandra Lee Grill. She refused to change plea. Judge Schaef fer sentenced her to three months in Lancaster county prison and fined $200. The death occurred when her auto struck Sandra as she waited to board a trolley. Hurst said she did not know stopping for trolley cars was required.

Baltimore Jan. ___ Two Washington, D. C. horsemen received prison terms today for substituting a ringer in two Pimlico horse races in November 1945. James S. ODonnell, 49, owner of Flying Kilts ran as Rounco, got two years. Roland Bennett Lanner, 44, trainer of Rounco, got 18 months. Judge Mason cited defrauding Pimlico and duping the public. O'Donnell previously had desertion, prohibition, and counterfeit charges. Appeals were noted.
