Britain protests to Yemen over border raids in the Aden protectorate. Yemen replies with charges that British armored columns attacked tribesmen on the frontier and that a protectorate prince was killed. Yemen also says Britain targets towns and aims to federate the sheikdoms.
Egypt plans to present the Suez Canal dispute to the 80 nation United Nations General Assembly in New York. Cairo says no direct talks with France or Britain, only discussions within the UN framework, counting on Asian, African and Soviet bloc support for Egypt. Israel seeks UN assurances of free navigation through the canal and the Gulf of Aqaba, plus a guarantee against a new Egyptian military buildup in Sinai before withdrawal.
Severe cold air from Canada spanned the Northern Plains from Montana to western Wisconsin and into Kansas. Temperatures ranged from teens near the front to 24 below zero at International Falls Minnesota, with other readings -16 at Grand Forks North Dakota and -15 at Fargo. Light snow fell in parts of the icy belt and northerly winds were reported. the chill was forecast to reach the northern half of the nation including the Great Lakes and Ohio Valley.

Three Hanover area youths Robert Lee Topper 16 McSherrystown Robert W. Fiddler 21 Hanover and Gary K Becker Abbotstown Pa were jailed in default of 5000 bond each on assault and robbery charges against taxi driver Elmer B Jones. Jones suffered a ruptured blood vessel near the heart and was taken to Baltimore for surgery amid an intensive sheriff’s probe. Deputy Claude Cline said the trio lured Jones to a road in exchange for fare then robbed him to return home, with the incident described as near-murder by Magistrate Paul Ottinger.
Washington House Foreign Affairs Committee faces delays as last minute developments stall hearings on the Eisenhower Middle East resolution. Chairman Gordon indicates hearings may run into next week, two weeks past earlier plans, with possible passage by January end. A four point program seeks authority to use troops if needed and to provide military and economic aid. A one sentence substitute omitting economic aid is circulating among Democrats.
A woman motorist sustained bruises when her car skidded into a parked vehicle on the 700 block of Salem Avenue today, injuring Elizabeth R. Carbaugh faced a charge of proceeding with caution while Adm Ebersole was charged with passing a caution and red? light.
Four young Pennsylvanians were injured when a 1287 Dodge sedan crashed into a Pennsylvania Railroad diesel engine at the Mt. Union crossing. Conductor George Swanger aided in transporting the injured to Waynesboro Hospital. Kenneth Smith was the most seriously hurt and later listed in critical condition. The car was described as a near total wreck.
Leaders from flood ravaged Wash county areas will convene Saturday at the Farmers Livestock Exchange near Boonsboro to study a county wide program. The session aims to unite officials, directors, and committeemen from all flooded sections to plan soil and water conservation, reforestation, and flood control measures. The gathering follows last July’s disaster and seeks to bring vital improvements to the affected regions.
Western Maryland saw two more inches of snow with crews from State and County Roads pressed into service. In Williamsport a 30 day jail term and heavy fines were imposed after two motorists were convicted of drunken driving. Prank Fair, 26, was fined 150 plus costs for drunken driving in Boonsboro, with 30 days jail for driving on a revoked license. William Lewis Bishop, 709 Forest Drive, was fined 150 for permitting Fair to drive, while Ronald Ritchie, 22, was fined 11.45 and six days in jail for drunken and disorderly driving. The cases were before Magistrate Ottinger in city court.
A report by Alton L. Blakeslee notes experiments by Drs Alice E. Moore Ches Southam and collaborators. Healthy volunteers and dying cancer patients received cultured or cancer cells to study tumor development, revealing four of 14 given cancer cells developed tumors while those given cultured cells did not. The work, conducted at the Shoan-Kettering Institute and New York University, aimed to uncover how normal tissues respond to cancerous and cultured cells.
Moscow reports say Chou En Lai and East German leaders reaffirmed support for the Soviet Union as head of world communism. Chou extends stay for more consultations before moves to Poland and Hungary while East Germans seek economic aid and talks on Soviet troop status.
Washington County delegates filed two state wide bills in Annapolis. One would make tossing lighted cigarettes or ashes from vehicles a misdemeanor near homes and businesses. The second would require commercial vehicles to install rear wheel splash guards to reduce spray, a bill that passed the House last year but died in the Senate.
City finances show a $40,000 allocation for employee wage increases in 1857 will not take effect until March 1. Council members said the raises, still to be determined by departmental hearings, will not be retroactive due to extensive bookkeeping. The council set aside $95,060 for wage and salary increases, with boosts not expected to be immediate.
