Fire Rages Through Two New York Central Piers
A general alarm fire swept two New York Central freight export piers on the Hudson opposite Midtown Manhattan. Pier 3 was destroyed while Pier 4 remained alight, with damage estimated in the millions. Five railroad workers were injured as crews fought the flames with fireboats, tugs, and land units. Car and train crash injures Oliver Reed in Maryland
Oliver Reed, 42, of 254 South Mulberry street, was seriously injured at 2 30 this morning when his 1939 Buick sedan was struck by a northbound freight train at the West Antietam street crossing. Reed was taken to Washington County Hospital with chest injuries. E B Carl, 606 North Potomac street, the restaurant operator driving Reed, told police the blinking signal lights were on but he saw no oncoming train and thought the signal was for a switch engine. The car was dragged about 350 feet to West Washington street and was a total wreck. Carl escaped injury. Officers Hoover and Carroll investigated.
