Keedysville weatherman J A Miller predicted snow by day’s end as a 24 degree low was logged overnight. The Weather Bureau favored snow in western Maryland with clearing later, while light snow began in Hagerstown and spread to Ohio and lower Michigan. Miss Carrie M. Mickey aged 61 head of social science at Chambersburg High School was found dead by hanging in the cellar of her home yesterday morning. Coroner S D Shull said death was by own action with no note. She had been ill for years and collapsed last summer while visiting a brother in New York state and was still on leave when schools reopened.

Man Dashes Into Spring To Escape Clothes Fire
Maurice Murray a 30 year old Big Springs farm hand suffered severe burns when a fire in his kitchen caused an oil can to explode. He ran 50 yards and leaped into a spring behind his home to escape the flames. He was brought to Washington County hospital for treatment. Several others in the vicinity were likewise injured or treated for burns and injuries, including Mrs Cleopatra Feigley Chalmer Gordon and a child named Ronald Burger.

Blue Cross Seeks One Third Rate Increase in Maryland
The Maryland Hospital Service, Inc. known as Blue Cross asked the State Insurance Department for a 33 percent premium hike effective March 1. Individual rates would rise from 75 cents to 1 dollar, couples from 1.50 to 2 dollars, and families from 2 to 2.60 dollars. Direct pay subscribers would pay 10 cents extra. Executive director J. D. Colman cited rising hospital costs. About 543,000 Marylanders are covered. this would be the first rate rise in a decade, following a year-end surplus of 2,499,698 dollars in 1946.

Diphtheria Hits Two More Areas in Holiday Period
Health officer Dr. Perry F Prather reported two additional diphtheria cases over the holidays. One occurred in Williamsport, the other in Beaver Creek. He urged immunization for all who have not received protection, noting many cases in surrounding areas. Adjacent Allegany county added three new cases since January 1, Cumberland reported fifty-eight cases from August 8 to December 31 and twenty-five since mid July. Cumberland and Allegany counties had long been free of diphtheria cases.
