Washington county education chief B J Grimes reports larger winter school attendance based on a recent census. He credits engaged parents and improved enforcement, noting compulsory attendance since nine years and a 60 percent drop in non attendance as schooling awareness grows, though farming areas still show gaps.
W C Philips and W B Thitzell complete field work for census gathering. Findings will be summarized and reports forwarded to the State Department of Education and filed at the school board office.

In Washington yesterday Senators Walsh of Montana and Robinson of Arkansas assailed Senator Bruce of Maryland for critical remarks about the investigation. Bruce denied aiming at Walsh’s personal activities while Robinson criticized him for not backing Senator Smith for chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission. Walsh mocked Bruce for past committee loyalties and urged Democrats to resist his stance as an ally of insurgents.
Three men charged with train riding were arrested by Western Maryland detectives Chapman and Stockdale. Lewiy Campbell and Edward Taylor were sentenced to four days in jail after arrest on the Chambersburg branch. J E Snyder, arrested in Hagerstown, received ten days in jail.

John Miles aged 60 of Montgomery county was burned to death when a home in his care burned. Shafer and Miles were linked to a pipe smoking habit and a long career as leading merchants in Hagerstown area. The incident ends a lengthy business life tied to men furnishings and local trade.
