The crippled Flying Enterprise, under Captain Kurt Carlsen, began sail toward Falmouth harbor at three knots after a long battle with the sea. John Roy Carlson, noted author of Undercover and The Plotters, will lecture at Hagerstown High School on Thursday January 17 at 8 p m. He recently completed Cairn ta Damascus based on travels in the Near East. The talk, arranged by Hagerstown Junior College and Kiwanis Club, has no admission charge. Carlson will discuss his recent experiences in the New East, followed by a question and answer period.
Washington County unemployment claims rose to 820 this week as textile and construction layoffs hit. The Maryland State Employment Office said a local construction firm laid off 190 workers, while several hundred in textiles were dismissed during inventory. Last week’s claims were 796, up from 400 the week before, with expectations of decline next week.
Harold Ridenour of 146 Roessner Avenue reported being struck by an unidentified hit and run motorist while placing chains on his car in the 800 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. He suffered minor injuries and was not seriously hurt.
Locally owned Antietam Natural Gas Company announced its first gas strike near Oakland in Garrett County. The 3900 foot well lies in the Lach Lyn district near existing wells by Columbia Gas System affiliates. Company president Joseph H. Dagenais Jr said drilling would continue with a nitroglycerine blast next week to determine volume. Stockholders include area business and professional leaders.
General Jacob L. Devers, famed WWI leader, will address the sixth annual banquet of the Hagerstown Manufacturers' Bureau at State Alexander on Tuesday evening January 15, announced by Harold M. Porter, bureau president. Devers, retiring after four years' service, joined Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corp last year and became military adviser to the United Nations mission to Kashmi. The turnover in real estate for the week topped 200 000 with the Hecht Co. shopping center deed boosting total, while several desirable residential properties and farms changed hands. John W. Chamberlain, head of the Smithsboro Smithsburg branch of the Wayne sboro Shoe Manufacturing Co, resigns for health reasons. He severed relations with the firm last week and plans to travel to Florida then California via Texas in late January. He joined the firm in 1942, served in the armed forces with the Alammes until 1946, then returned and opened the Smithaburg branch that year.
Federal agents pursue larger targets in a nationwide dragnet targeting dope peddlers. Narcotics Commissioner Harry Anslinger says 190 agents and 200 informers remain active to help dismantle the crime network and prepare grand jury cases within weeks. He credits the sweep as the biggest mop-up of dope ring leaders yet.
New York reports Senator Kefauver stated he is interested in the presidency and is studying the situation, while denying prior claims about seeking the vice presidency. He noted he has always said he was not interested in the VP and plans to announce decisions early.
Prime Minister Winston Churchill arrived in the United States for talks with President Truman and said the prospects for world peace are solid in 1952. He dodged questions on Soviet danger, noted Berlin airlift as a benchmark, and urged prudent measures while stressing U S Britain must understand each other to elevate relations beyond the paper level.
Transit workers in Baltimore rejected a four cent hourly wage increase proposed by the Transit Company for about 3200 operators and maintenance staff. Union leaders authorized, but not yet scheduled for walkout, while Executive Board meets Monday night. Negotiations continue amid talk of a possible strike next Thursday.
In Alexandria Minnesota January 3 a nine pound boy born to Mrs Bernard Wagner joins an 18 member clan. The family gathers for a mass reunion with siblings Emma Bernard Donna Joan Earl Annette Allan Darryl Donald Doris Jan Myron Barbara twins Dean Dennis Sharon Ronald and paternal grandmother Mrs Joe Wagner present. Absentee is Pfc Jeo Wagner serving in the Air Force at San Antonio Texas. Bernard a Pfc also at home on furlough from the same base.
Seoul reported air clashes over northwest Korea as American Sabre jets and Communist MIGs tangled for about 20 minutes. No damage was reported on either side despite the 21 allied F-Sig and 40 MIG-15s engaging, with another sighting of 25 MIGs and limited ground activity along the 145 mile front. Overnight fighter-bombers claimed destruction or damage to enemy vehicles in darkness, while ground contacts remained light.
A 3 to 5 inch wet snow in Washington County yesterday did little to slow traffic this morning. Main highways 50 to 71 percent clear at 9 am. Route 40 over Sideling Hill only small stretch required chains. Foxville had five inches. Hagerstown and Hancock areas three inches. Allegany two inches. Garrett no snow. Temperatures 40 to 46 expected today, turning colder tonight. Roads crews worked. Dual Highway and South Mountain partly bare. Sunday fair, Monday cloudy and warmer.
Paris, Jan. 5. North Korea applied again for United Nations membership, the Communist regime previously voted out in 1949 for lack of a legitimate Korean government. The new bid faces slim chances of success as the Republic of Korea is recognized as the sole legitimate government. Also reported is the marriage of Vance de Barr Colvig, 59, to Peggy Bernice Allaire, 43, in Los Angeles, marking their second marriage for each.
Hagerstown Housing Authority will start interviewing applicants Monday for 250 low rent units at Westview and Parkside Homes. Applications remain open as interviews continue after occupancy expected in spring. Interviews by Mrs. Phyllis Barr will last 30 to 60 minutes and require assets like cars and cash. Displaced families get first priority. rent is a fixed percentage of income adjusted for family size.
Jean Boyer, a 15 year old Waynesboro girl, remained in critical condition at Washington County Hospital after a December 28 Greyhound bus crashed into the car she rode in. She suffered skull and leg fractures in the accident that killed Ede Nicholas, Blue Ridge Buramit, and left another girl injured.
