Washington Jan. 3. A PBM Mariner seaplane carrying eight aboard is overdue on an exploratory flight from the Navy Antarctic expedition. It took off from the Pine Island at 5 45 a m Dec 30 and was to return by 3 45 p m the same day with fuel for 11 more hours. The last report came at 7 25 a m Dec 30, about 250 miles south of Pine Island, weather hindered search efforts, and Capt Henry Howard Caldwell was among the crew.

Betty Myers of Hagerstown escaped injury when the airliner carrying 16 people crashed in fog near Nashville Tennessee. Hagerstonians started the New Year by filing 1946 income tax returns. Allen H. Mumma, deputy in charge of the local Internal Revenue office, said farmers may file their 1946 returns by January 15 while others have until March 15. The Post Office office opened yesterday for receipts and will operate daily 8:30 to 5, with extra deputies available after January 15 to assist.
