At the Pentagon on Wednesday Maj. Gen. John left and Brig. Gen. William J. Evans are shown with electronic sensor models used to detect North Vietnamese supply routes through Laos. U.S. aircraft used radio sounds and vibrations from trucks to guide fighter bombers in strikes.
President Nixon signaled readiness to unleash massive airpower in Indochina to protect U S forces, telling reporters he will not place limits on actions that could target North Vietnam. He also cited plans for a revenue sharing proposal and touched on Middle East mediation and Laos operations.
The Associated Press reports Israel will withdraw only after a signed peace treaty. Egypt says it has accepted all UN peace proposals via special envoy Gunnar V. Jarring, who urged declarations of intent from Israel Jordan and Egypt. Abba Eban warned the core issue remains Egypt’s willingness to sign a document ending the 1967 war, while doubting Sadat’s Newsweek statement on partial Sinai withdrawal.
New York markets showed fading strength as the Dow Jones average slid to around 883.5 while gains lagged. By 10:30 a.m. prices remained active though under profit-taking pressure, with declines outweighing advances on the New York Stock Exchange.
South Vietnamese forces cut major North Vietnamese supply lanes through southern Laos and repelled two Communist attacks in eastern Cambodia, killing 16 enemy. American air strikes hit NVA buildups near central highlands as 2,500 Saigon troops mass near the border and 16,000 operate in Laos with 1,600 new troops in Cambodia.
Pen tagon sources report North Vietnamese may shift male supply traffic to Laos Route 23 west of the Ho Chi Minh Trail as ground attacks by South Vietnamese troops press the main corridor. Electronic sensors dropped from U.S. planes detect increased truck activity along the Laotian route, suggesting Hanoi may reroute traffic if the Trail is threatened. U.S. analysts monitor sensor data to project possible truck flow and direct air attacks to disrupt the movements.
AP report shows 51 Vietnamese crossed borders into American lines and died in Laos and Cambodia during the week. U.S. deaths total 217, with 24 killed the prior week, the highest tally since November. Americans wounded 217, with one inside Laos and six killed in Laos air operations. Casualties blamed on delayed recovery and continued fighting in the northwest corner of South Vietnam as troopers support operations.
