A Feb 16 report by Dr. J Knox Insley shows a 23 percent drop in employment in Maryland manufacturing from December 8 to January 1929 and a 7.6 percent fall in weekly payrolls. Most sectors declined 5 to 15.9 percent with tobacco, lay and glass products hit hardest. 188 establishments ran normally, 40 on part schedules, with 866 workers full-time or more.
Friday evening the non commissioned officers of Co B organized an NCO club with Corp Glenn R Martin as president and officers C B Bille, E P Schiotterbeck, and Victor Conrad in key posts. A bylaws committee led by Sir Carl J Schlotterbeck was named. Next meeting scheduled for Friday February 22 at the State Armory to report bylaws. George Fisher colored, Civil War veteran and church member, died at his daughter’s home 133 Bloom's avenue. He leaves three sons and four daughters and four grandchildren. Funeral announcements will follow.
The Boy Scout Carnival opens tonight at the Armory with strong arm stunts by local Scouts at 7 30. Each night features different entertainment including Municipal Band Williamsport Band high school Orchestra and a Company B drill. A Kreider Reisner Challenger plane exhibit and Stoutcraft demonstrations accompany a Pearre Scout camp relief map.
John D Holliday vice president and trust officer of Nicodemus National Bank spoke at the Meridian Club dinner at the Women's Club urging members to make wills and seek expert advice. He explained banks keep records and can act as executors, and answered related questions. Also noted a pedigreed dog Dresetius Von Aciershof owned by Miss Josephine Sweeney was killed by a car on South Prospect Street.
Four times wounded in World War I and six times decorated for valor the Countess de Merode died in Phoenix after being struck by a bicycle rider. She served at a field hospital near Ypres and endured gas attacks and a battlefield disaster. Her identity and past remained largely unknown to friends.

Plans by Thoralf Sundt of Philadelphia have church and Sunday school officials approval. A business session on February 27 will decide, with construction likely soon if approved.
The Hagerstown Better Service Club met at the P. R. R. freight depot Thursday night with about 40 attendees. Speakers included Rev. Dr. J. E. Harms on serving others, L. C. Ayers of the N. & W. Roanoke, A B. Schwarz of N. & W. Roanoke claims, and T. B. Williams of P. R. Ruf Chambersburg.
Wright Field Ohio February 15 Lieutenant Harry A Johnson aborts a high altitude flight for the second time this week due to engine trouble. He reached roughly 30 000 to 35 000 feet before making an emergency descent.
The first annual Chamber of Commerce membership dinner is set for Friday at 6 30 PM in the Hotel Alexander. Chester A Leasure of The Nation's Business will be the principal speaker. Free nontransferable tickets go to members with one guest ticket allowed each. Reservations priority to be given as received. 300 to 400 guests expected. Directors back Haagerstown broadcasting plan as a major city advertising medium and a committee will compile industrial sites in Hagerstown with maps for C of C headquarters. No action on the Washington County muskrat farm proposal.
The World Day of Prayer service in Trinity Lutheran auditorium drew large attendance from city and county churches under the Interdenominational Mission Group of Hagerstown. The program featured solos, readings, and addresses about missions, with plans announced for the annual School of Missions on September 24 and 25 at the Presbyterian Church.
Scouting troops will attend an evening service at St Pauls United Brethren Church Sunday with Dr F B Plummer preaching a special sermon for the scouts. The service will begin with a gospel song, and the troop oath and scout law will be recited as part of the observance. Evangelistic meetings begin February 1 at Sharpsburg Church of the Brethren with Rally Day in Sunday School at 10 am and services nightly at 7:30 led by Rev Harold Snider and song leader W S Bostetler.
