The county faces severe crop losses as frost and sub zero temperatures injure wheat fields and damage fruit crops. Peach and cherry buds show little chance of survival, with early apples likely harmed and apricots and pears largely wiped out. Martinsburg area reports confirm extensive damage across orchards.
The grand jury reported three indictments including seven percent Barker for false pretenses and one against J Preston Bishop Hancock for false pretense. The jury could not adjourn yesterday but will close its affairs today perhaps this afternoon.
Charlie Ponzi, once a famed financial wizard, left the state prison today and was arrested on a deportation warrant. Immigration inspectors took him to East Boston Station, where he was held in custody of Immigration Commissioner Miss Mary Ward. His lawyer secured 90 days of freedom pending final deportation actions as reporters photographed the scene.
President Roosevelt plans an open letter by Postmaster General Farley to justify canceling 12 airmail contracts. Farley said records will be checked and referenced for Senate investigators and court action. The letter aims to answer Republican criticism and Lindbergh’s telegram as the Transcontinental and Western Air case proceeds in New York federal court.
New York Feb 14 The Army was urged to revoke Colonel Charles A. Lindberghs commission in the officers reserve corps after Arthur W. McMahon of New York charged Lindberghs telegram protesting air mail contract cancellations showed conduct unbecoming an officer. McMahon asked a board of officers review and said the telegram harmed good order and reflected selfishly on reserve officers. General Nolan may act at his discretion. Nolan was in Tonawanda N Y where his mother died yesterday.
Washington observers report House leaders abandoned plans for a gag rule after veterans’ issue concerns. Rep Byas of Tennessee and others said changing rules to require 218 signatures instead of 145 could not proceed. With 110 signatures already, 35 more would force a vote on the $2.4 billion bonus bill and discharge the Ways and Means Committee. party lines and missing votes left the outcome uncertain.
In Pittsfield Illinois on February 14 a local paper carried the Rev Will Cannon’s note after thieves stole 31 chickens. He appealed in the ad for readers to come and get the remaining three, calling them lone and forlorn.
The State Tax Commission yesterday granted articles of incorporation to the H. V. Hart Company in this city with authority to operate a public garage and issue 10,000 shares of stock at $10 par value. Incorporators are Homer V. Hart, Margaret J D Hart and Joseph P Mish.

The Soviet ice breaker Chiliuskin, trapped in ice in the Bering Strait for nearly five months, was crushed in a jam yesterday and sank with one life reported. The loss occurred as the ship battled the solid ice pack, with Moscow receiving the advisory.

Phoenix Arizona February reports Mrs C C Cambridge 74 took doctors advice to keep her liver shaken up by riding a motorcycle with J F Buckner when the bike collided with a car. She quipped to the musician treating her that the advice made her ride and it did shake her up.
Parole Commissioner Gaylord Lee Clark denied the parole of Herbert M. Hartman director of the closed Park Bank. Hartman is serving a one year sentence in Baltimore city jail after conviction of conspiracy to defraud the depositors.
Several hundred Washington county milk producers, many shipping to Philadelphia, plan a Friday night meeting at 7 30 at the YMCA to organize for higher milk prices. The Allied Dairy Farmers Association says some farmers get as low as 372 cents a gallon. They will push changes in Interstate Milk Marketing agreement after citing the secretary of agriculture report showing Philadelphia area dealers earned profits as high as 36 38 percent with five year totals at 30 76 percent. A program to improve prices and conditions for county producers will be developed at the meeting.
Vienna February 14 Chancellor Englebert Dollfuss dismissed the Socialist bid to resist the government with armed force as madness. He said the failed attempt will strengthen the government and unite the people behind law and order. He called the move to mobilize Republican guards a mad beginning and noted the federal position is stronger than ever.
In Vienna and across Austria grim fighting raged as government troops advanced. The death toll reportedly reached 1000 to 1500 with many more injured. Socialist strongholds fell under machine gun and artillery fire as government forces claimed victory on all fronts. Socialist HQ at Floridsdorf fell after fierce combat and Linz was brought under government control.
Commissioner Gaylord Lea Clark urged Governor Albert C. Ritchie to parole Louis Berger, a Baltimore Communist leader serving six months for assaulting an officer. Berger’s conviction tied to disturbances after liberal lawmakers visited Annapolis to push repeal of Jim Crow laws.
About 200 Elks members and many prominent citizens greeted Walter F. Meijer of Seattle, Grand Exalted Ruler of Elks, at a noon reception and luncheon at the local Elks Club. Attorney General William Preston Lane introduced him, noting no prepared speech. Meijer spoke of his travels and joked about lawyers, calling the reception in Hagerstown memorable for its hospitality.
