US troops sent to Aruba and Curaçao to defend oil refineries

Washington reports a contingent of the US Army has been sent to the Dutch islands Aruba and Curaçao to assist Dutch forces in defending oil refineries vital to the war effort. The move, at the Netherlands’ request, aims to deter German threats and is to end after the emergency. Venezuela and the Netherlands coordinate to support defense.

Launch Three More Warships

Philadelphia reports three new destroyers Butler and Gherardi launching ahead of Lincoln birthday ceremonies. In Camden New Jersey the cruiser Montpelier is named after its sponsor city. Keel plates for two escort vessels were prepared as destroyers cleared the ways.

Britain To Get Part Of Synthetic Rubber

London February 12 minister Lord Beaverbrook told the House of Lords the Washington combined raw materials board plans to produce 400000 tons of synthetic rubber annually with Britain receiving 50000 tons. Harold Hahn, 28, returned from Jacksonville to be sentenced to six months in the House of Correction for contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Sheriff Baker delivered Hahn to the "Cut".

Standard Oil tanker W. L. Steed sunk off New Jersey by Axis sub

New York February 12 The third Naval District reports the sinking of the Standard Oil tanker W. L. Steed by an Axis submarine off the New Jersey coast on February 2. Three survivors out of 38 crew members landed at an Allied port after two days in lifeboats. The submarine fired 17 shells. eight or nine Germans were seen on the conning tower. Survivors include Louis Hariz Ralph Mazzucco and Joaquim R. Vrea. The vessel, built 1918 at Quincy Massachusetts, was 416 feet long with Wilmington Delaware home port. Total ships attacked off the Atlantic reach 24 since January 22 with 746 dead or missing.

Registration Plans Ready for 19 to 45 Age Group

Officials of local Draft Boards met with School Superintendent Benjamin C Willis and 24 school principals to organize the February 14 to 16 registration for men born on or before December 31, 1921 and under 45 on February 16, 1942. Willis sworn in as chief registrar. principals become deputy registrars. teachers to be sworn in as registrars. About 3500 men must register at 24 designated schools. list of assistant registrars and their schools provided with scattered deputy names. Registration hours set for February 1, 15 from 9 AM to 5 PM and February 16 from 7 AM to 9 PM.
