Smoke from massive fires fills the sky as Japanese forces close in, with British fighters hard-pressed and outdated bi planes making a last-ditch bombing run. McDaniel notes nerves, darkness, and the impactful echo of battle from his last dispatch.
A Hagerstown family receives a section of a destroyed Japanese plane from Corporal Robert W. Cleland stationed at Camp Malakole Hawaii. He describes the plane raiding their camp and being shot down during a blackout in Oahu. The letter notes martial law, a sea voyage, and a Honolulu Advertiser headline clipping.
Civilian Defense headquarters announced removal of two directional markers visible to fliers. One marked the Hagerstown airport and another on the roof of the Hagerstown Shoe and Legging Company. The Maryland Council of Defense ordered all such markers painted out for the duration as they could aid enemy bombers. Countywide markers are also to be removed and all air markings within 150 miles of coasts to be obliterated immediately. Frederick county plans to obliterate markers this week.
Chinese forces defending Burma clashed with Japanese invaders for the first time. Major General Lancelot E. Dennys, head of the British Military Mission in China, announced today.
London reports a Ministry of Economic Warfare official said France supplied 5500 tons of gasoline and aviation fuel to German forces in Libya in December and January. He noted almost 2000 trucks and private cars were sent from France in 1941 and Rommel’s forces received 12000 tons of wheat in a three month span.
Leroy Carroll, colored, already charged with raping his 11 year old niece, now faces an assault with intent to rape charge after Mrs. Wenona V. Volgamott of Hagerstown identified him yesterday as the man who grabbed her and threw her to the ground near Frederick Junction on January 25. A hearing on assault and battery was underway when the prosecutor moved to enter the more serious charge. The case goes before the grand jury meeting next week. Volgamott and another local girl were hitchhiking home from Fort Meade when the attack occurred.
Lieut J G Franklin D Roosevelt Jr was reported resting comfortably at the Brooklyn Naval Hospital after an appendectomy performed yesterday.
Washington February 11 The price administrator Leon Henderson announced rationing of retreaded and recapped tires would start February 19. He warned crude rubber for recapping will be scarce beyond those eligible for new tires. The program includes camelback rubber used in retreading and will be overseen by existing tire boards. The War Production Board will set monthly crude rubber allocations for retreading, with only limited supplies available.
Bellevue, the county home, is valued at 211 348 06 according to an audit filed with the Board of County Commissioners. The report breaks the total into buildings and farm 201 750 00 machinery and equipment 1 062 50 and livestock 8 535 56. The audit by J Elvin Unger covers the year ending December 31 1941 and shows an operating outlay of about 20 000 last year.
Deer roaming the Smithsburg mountains suffer heavy losses as packs of dogs roam the area. Three carcasses were found near the Frederick county line, with a fourth deer killed by an automobile and driven from the mountains by dogs, according to Regional Game Warden Benjamin F. Phebus. Two deer were also sighted near Woodsboro, he added, suggesting dogs force them from their habitat.
Cleveland report notes wartime octane reductions across brands as oil firms cut premium grades from about 80 to 78 or 76 and regular from 75 to 72 or 70 to aid aviation fuel supply and lead shortages. An Ohio oil official says firms avoided public disclosure to prevent stoking demand while informing operators.
In VNCHY on February 11, German authorities under Gen Otto von Stuelpnagel ordered Jews in occupied France to remain indoors from 10 p m to 6 a m and barred changes of residence. Violations could lead to internment in concentration camps, imprisonment, or fines.

The Navy announced Admiral Thomas C. Hart was relieved as chief of Allied naval forces in the western Pacific due to illness. Vice Admiral C. E. L. Helfrich of the Royal Netherlands Navy was named his successor. Hart, 64, had requested relief for health reasons. Further details were not released.

Fishing Creek in Frederick County, a leading trout stream feeding the Frederick City reservoir, may be closed this season as officials consider restricting access. An unnamed official questioned the logic of paying guards to patrol the creek and dam while allowing unrestricted fishing.
Ordean C. Hill of 104 Blooms avenue has been promoted to corporal while stationed at Camp Davis North Carolina. He serves in the Anti Aircraft Coast Artillery and Barrage Balloon training center and the promotion was confirmed today by unit headquarters.
Thursday evening a civilian defense first aid class will be held at South Potomac Junior High School at 7:30. The session aims to teach basic emergency response skills to residents in the area.
London reports British forces in Singapore launch two violent counter-attacks against Japanese invaders. Despite overwhelming numbers, defenders claim some success and note the position may be improving in places while the island still faces threat to reservoirs and vital services. Japanese forces have entered the city area of Singapore and the fall of the fortress remains uncertain.
Dutch Indies air forces blocked a Japanese bombing formation aiming for the Soerabaja naval base in Java. Aneta reported a direct attack on Macassar in Celebes with landings at Balangaipa and Ejene. The high command said planned destruction in the Macassar area was carried out.
Albert L. Huffer aged 45 of 743 Maryland Avenue fell from a box car and sustained a fractured left arm and a hurt right knee. He was taken to Washington County Hospital for treatment. Kenneth Ebersole, a three year old from Maugansville, crushed his right hand in a washing machine wringer and was treated at Washington County Hospital before going home.

Salinas California February 11 two high Japanese police officials including a former Tokyo police chief posing as a Buddhist priest were among a score seized by Federal agents in a raid on Nipponese colonies. A temple raid yielded three priests and a truckload of contraband. One priest Rev Koyo Tamanaka was a former Tokyo police chief Yaichi Takatayashi, a Salinas laundry proprietor, was a former high police official and close friend of Hirohito's brother.
