Butler Charged With Conduct Unbecoming an Officer
Washington February 10 Major General Smegiey D Butler would have faced a court martial on conduct unbecoming an officer and a gentleman. The Navy Department announced the charges were withdrawn after secret conferences and Butler issued an apology. His case, once to be tried in Philadelphia, involved remarks about Mussolini that offended Italy and risked U S foreign relations.
