A fire at a Washington Street apartment building near Gilek's Shoe Store forced evacuations on the upper floors and left a third and fourth floor heavily damaged. About 70 firefighters fought shifting flames in freezing conditions. two residents were treated for smoke inhalation and minor burns while others were rescued from windows. Damage included Glick's Shoe Store and the Professional Arts Building. Investigators pursued the fire origin as crews cooled the scene all morning.
Police found the 80 year old woman and her neighbor Margaret Shatter 77 in a Sheepshead Bay home where an oil burner failure caused burst pipes and icy conditions. Neighbors describe a decaying, garbage filled house with a dog near the bodies. autopsy pending to rule out foul play.
