In Renton New Jersey on February 1 Col H Norman Schwarzkopf head of the state police launches a secret new investigation into the Lindbergh kidnapping by order of Gov Harold G Hoffman. Hauptmann awaits execution yet Hoffman offers to supply evidence of accomplices or tips and direct police to pursue standard procedures.
Three residents of Smiths Islands, icebound in Tangier Sound, prepare to trek ten miles to their homes with a 14 foot boat for shelter. They aim to reach a lighthouse three miles away for overnight rest, then cover seven more miles Sunday. Doctor W F Soeur fears illness if the island remains cut off. About fifty Tangier Island residents were forced to remain on the mainland due to ice.
Washington County road forces will operate without a supervising foreman for a period after Charles H. Rinehart retired. Rinehart had served as temporary supervising foreman for a year and did not qualify under the merit system. Dr H Kh Tabler, Commission chairman, said the post would not be filled now to save funds amid heavy snow-related budget strains.
Louise Wolfe walked a mile and a half to Junior High in sub zero weather to avoid spoiling her perfect attendance record. Physicians said her condition was not serious.
William J. Hansman of Elkton West Virginia is appointed general erecting foreman of the Hagerstown shows of the Western Maryland Railway effective today. He joined the company in 1907 as a machinist apprentice at the Ridgeley shops and has been general foreman at the Elkins shops prior to this appointment.
In Three Rivers Quebec on February 1 a house fire killed Mr and Mrs Jarvis Thompson and their daughter Patricia. D B Baxter was seriously burned trying to rescue his daughter and son-in-law and their three year old child.issuing authorities unnamed. Baxter injured.
In Hagerstown a farmer kept a shivering cow content by draping a blanket made from old coats over Tillie. The improvised covering led to a noticeable increase in milk production, illustrating the old saying that a contented cow yields more and better milk.
Rep Brand dispatched a privately owned dirigible to Tangier and Smith's Islands in Chesapeake Bay to investigate distress reports. He cited claims of over 1,500 people without outside communication for more than ten days and possible food shortages.
New York leaders at a joint legislative hearing discuss a regional compact to regulate milk sheds across seven states. Delegates from New York New Jersey Pennsylvania Maryland Connecticut Vermont and Massachusetts attend briefing chaired by Assemblyman John A Byrnes. The Potomac and its tributaries suffer from a cold spell with extensive ice jams. Federal and state investigators met in Sunbury Pa to plan inquiries into the Reading company's express wreck at a bridge that killed three and injured several. The hospital said the two most seriously hurt, Mrs Clara Brownell of Williamsport and Fred W Fulton of Muncy, remained about the same.
London report says Keith Williams wealthy promoter and his 15 year old daughter received kidnappers threats. He claimed a man warned they would be bumped off and another threatened to beat him. An attempt to kidnap occurred outside his hotel last week. Williams was with a bodyguard when a suit over a Mayfair charity gambling party was dismissed.
Charles Gibbons and his 12 year old son underwent appendicitis operations on the same day at Peninsula General Hospital in Salisbury. The son was stricken earlier in the week and operated on Tuesday morning while the father, who was nearby, was also operated on Tuesday afternoon. Both procedures were successful and the pair are convalescing together at home and in hospital.

Five Savannah residents died in a 3 am crash when their car collided with a freight train backing onto the highway at Port Wentworth. The victims named by police were Bert Warnedee the driver, Miss Letha Wise, Elton or Fleming Thacker, and Mr. and Mrs. Heyward Stewart. They were en route to an amusement center in South Carolina.
Metropolitan Edison Company files appeal in Superior Court to block Myerstown Lebanon county from building a municipal electric plant. Eleven exceptions target PSC ruling allowing the project.
Eugene R. Woodson, 46, vice president of the Railroad Credit Corporation, leapt from his eighth floor Transportation Building office in Washington.
