New York on December 27 was buried under 25.8 inches of snow the heaviest in city history. Officials met to plan relief as transport froze and traffic disappeared. Deaths reached at least 26 across the storm belt with six in New York and seven in New Jersey. The metropolis bore the brunt of the unusual blizzard-like conditions despite no high winds.

Older guard Augustus Post recalls 1888 breaking 40 inches of snow on one side of the street while 47’s storm was different. he notes the lack of East River freezing conditions and recalls six days of city isolation after 1888. New Hampshire towns like Lebanon measured over 20 inches as drifts up to six feet impeded highways and prompted rescues. Massachusetts officials urged motorists to stay off roads amid hundreds of stranded vehicles. In contrast, Long Beach California reported a high of 87 degrees yesterday.
Washington County and nearby regions saw light winter conditions amid heavier snow to the west in Allegany and Garrett counties where 7 to 10 inches fell yesterday. Eastern areas reported 3 to 6 inches, with 1 to 2 inches in Hagerstown and valley towns. Wind and drifting snow kept roads passable though icy spots remained. Roads crew operated 13 trucks in Garrett County to clear highways, while chains were advised for travel west of Cumberland. Blue Ridge Transportation offices reported operations continuing as usual.
The Home Furniture Company lumber yard in suburban York Pa burned in a early today fire causing unofficial damage of about $100,000. The blaze spread to the nearby planing and furniture mill before York and West York fire crews brought it under control in about two and a half hours. Fire Chief L Ellis Wagner called the spread rapid and said there will be a thorough probe. An owner said inventory will determine the final loss. Police and fire officials called $100000 a conservative estimate.
Herbert Braithwaite, charged in a warrant for breaking and entering the George Washington garage in Winchester Virginia on January 2 1947 and who had lived in Hagerstown for months surrendered to Winchester police. He was sought on a fugitive warrant.
In Ankara on December 27 rioting students shouting anti-Communist slogans invaded Ankara University and compelled the rector to resign, alleging leftist sympathies.
Glendon McCoy, 24, who skipped bail on a forgery charge, is in FBI custody in Tucson for violation of the Dyer Act and will be returned to face trial. State's Attorney Martin L. Ingram said U S Marshal B J Kinney indicated the warrant will act as a detainer and follow him to the federal facility. McCoy was indicted for forging C and P Telephone payroll checks. bondsman Ellik Kaplan offered a reward. Deputy Howard Youngblood helped secure detainers and reward. case set for December 18.
The Western Maryland Railway reports November operating revenues of 3 697 104, up from 2 588 918 in November 1946, lifting year to date totals to 38 337 650 from 29 144 904. November expenses were 2 459 179 versus 1 964 915 last year, with November net income of 591 173 compared to 105 966 in 1946. Year to date net stands at 4 922 415, up from 1 927 814 last year.
