New York City faced a frigid Christmas with fuel oil truck driver strikes and widespread flu. George Martin and others huddled indoors as icy conditions blanketed windows. Blood banks reported dangerously low supplies amid donor illness and rising demand.
U S military reports say the 24 hour Christmas cease fire ended at 6 p m with Viet Cong offensive operations resuming north of Saigon and along coastal lowlands. American and South Vietnamese units fought back killing at least 53 enemy combatants and suffering 36 Americans wounded during the renewed clashes.
U S combat deaths in Vietnam fell to 151 killed in action and 838 wounded last week, the lowest total in five weeks. South Vietnamese and enemy casualties rose modestly with initial enemy kills at about 2,118, though subject to later adjustments. Since Jan 1, 1961, enemy deaths reached 427,595. U S deaths 30,430 and U S wounded 191,806.
The stock market staged a mild technical rally in moderate trading early today with gains outnumbering losses on the New York Stock Exchange. About 1,200 common stocks were higher, automakers advanced fractionally, and leaders included Du Pont IBM and Central Soya. Northwest Airlines rose about 2.5 points as investors reacted to a recent award.
New York faces a miserable Christmas as bitter cold and fuel oil shortages join a flu outbreak. Health officials urged the mayor to push emergency deliveries. Temperature stood at 13 degrees above zero at 4 45 a.m. and only a fraction of needed oil reached unheated apartments amid thousands of heat and illness complaints.
