Bomb threats spur renewed hunt for New York Mad Bomber
Police received five bomb threats by telephone across Manhattan and Brooklyn urging evacuations. A dud device was found at Ft Tilden after Army ordnance experts planned detonation. No injuries reported though several people were wounded by earlier bombs. The caller left a card at the New York Public Library.

Traffic Deaths Hit All Time Record With California Leading All States
Traffic deaths reached a historic holiday total with California posting the highest toll among states. The AP tally shows 898 traffic fatalities, 49 in fires, 120 in other accidents, and a total all-accidents figure surpassing past records. California led with more than 70 deaths. Worst Holiday Traffic Death Toll in California

Five Killed In Maryland Holiday Traffic Toll
Maryland drivers ended the Christmas weekend with five highway deaths in the period from 6 p.m. Friday to midnight Saturday, plus one person struck and killed by a train Monday. A 59 year old Bel Air man was found burned in his car in Harford County, death not yet ruled accidental. Agnes Smalenskis, 71, Baltimore, died from injuries in a November auto crash, not counted in the holiday toll. Maryland total for the year reached 538, up from 503 the prior year.

Aid Applications Rise as Welfare Board Seeks Help
Washington County Welfare Board received 41 applications in November for assistance while 1,193 people got aid totaling 47,412 dollars. Police Kill Assailant In Gun Battle
A Cleveland Greyhound terminal shooting left the bus driver Leo Almerica 49 dead and an 18 year old passenger Miss Georgeann Kartzke killed. The assailant was killed by police after exchanging fire with Patrolman Mike Barrett and Sgt. Michael Sirkot. Wounded included Miss Alice Cavanaugh and several others treated at Charity Hospital.
