Police found the mutilated body of a young blonde woman in a cellar of a crumbling brownstone. She wore a stained green coat. her lower abdomen was cut, and her face bruised, suggesting a brutal attack by a madman. Assistant Medical Examiner Miles called it the work of a madman.
In Hagerstown and vicinity, two major Christmas events drew thousands of children. The Antietam Fire Co. hall hosted nearly 2,000 kids with candy orange gifts and Santa, while the nearby Warner Bros theatres staged a second party with acts, films, and more presents.
Over 2,000 payroll checks were distributed to WPA employees in Washington, Frederick, Carroll, Howard and Montgomery Counties on Monday and Tuesday. The checks were delivered by a special messenger, prompting a last minute Christmas Eve rush.
A woman guest died and several other guests were missing after the Princess theatre walls collapsed onto the adjacent two story Federal transient hotel in downtown Hot Spring, Arkansas. Fire hindered search as wreckage burned and delays hampered recovery efforts. One identified victim is Mrs. J. K. Love of Jackson Mississippi. Several injured were taken to hospitals and looters were not reported. Property loss is estimated at 250000 dollars.
Firemen quickly extinguished a chimney fire at Ross and Lanvale Streets at midnight. Damage was slight and the incident was reported amid a lively, year 1935 era news tone.
