Universal brings an all talking screen with Mary Nolan in Shanghai Lady at the Colonial Theatre tomorrow. John Robertson directs a glamorous Oriental tale featuring James Murray Wheeler Oakman Anders Randolf Lydia Yeamans Titus Yola d Avril Mona Rico and others in the supporting cast. Also the serial King of the Kongo ends in tomorrow and Saturday episodes.
Bit of humor in So Long Letty shows at The Maryland today. Charlotte Greenwood delivers a mixed performance with some acting merit. Patsy Ruth Miller uplifts the piece. The plot follows two unhappy married couples who swap wives for a week to learn a lesson. Domestic and party-loving husbands face fallout, then reconcile. Residents of South Hagerstown held a Christmas Eve program under the community tree at South Potomac Street and South Boulevard. The night featured carols led by Rev Holdcraft or Holycraft, readings, prayers, and performances by the Epworth League and local churches. Participants included the Jolly Carolers and Union Chapel choir with LeRoy Karn and Roland Davies assisting.
Jedson Pryor of Smithsburg was found guilty of driving under the influence. Magistrate Richard Duffey fined him 100 dollars plus costs or sentenced him to 90 days in Washington county jail. In default of payment he was jailed. Pryor and C E Hayes were arrested after a fight on West Franklin Street by Patrolmen Hamill and Limberg. Hayes received a ten dollar fine for drunk and disorderly conduct.
Fire shortly before midnight destroyed the awning in front of the Pen Mar grocery on West Franklin Street. Investigators believe a lighted cigarette tossed from an upstairs window started the blaze.
