Christmas observances filled churches citywide with early services and evening programs. St John Lutheran and St John Episcopal hosted services and readings with choirs and bells as the Yuletide season was celebrated for the fifth year.
Christmas Eve programs at Community Tree Washington Square and dawn services at Isl an Reformed Church marked the day. Churches including St John’s Lutheran Trinity Lutheran and Washington Square Methodist held carols prayers and sermons with large crowds and a Sunday School orchestra performing. A camel solo by G S Pullen and organ assist by Roy A McMichael highlighted recitals while moving picture shows drew crowds. rheumatism ads followed.
Children at the local Home for Children celebrated Christmas with church services a pageant and a Santa visit. Santa Claus returned on Christmas morning with Kiwanis members and the Municipal Band. A Christmas dinner featured turkey and gifts from local donors. The event concluded with thanks to volunteers and a note that non Christmas contributions will be in the next managers’ report dated January 4, 1924.
The police announce plain clothes officers will patrol streets after numerous complaints of young men loitering in doorways and corners making remarks to passing women. Chief Barber orders immediate arrest of offenders to curb the behavior.
A police chief declares that disruption and molestation on the streets will not be tolerated and prison sentences will replace fines. He emphasizes strict measures for endangering public order and promises decisive action for cases brought before him.
The Christians rush at the Hagerstown postoffice kept a systematic flow with every parcel card and letter ready for noon delivery. Postmaster Frank L Dennett said the force worked long hours to serve locals, leaving the post office floors empty of Christmas mail after noon yesterday. Deboett noted a 35 percent rise in first class matter and 25 percent in parcels over 1923. Seven extra workers were added last Thursday and two more Saturday to handle the workload.
