Nationalist Defense Ministry reports 62 minute sea clash off Matsu with two Chinese Communist gunboats. Nationalists say no casualties or hits claimed. Air Force denies Peiping report of a China bound British ship attack, stating patrol planes observed but did not strike.
A reproduced color image from the 1958 Herald-Mail Co calendar shows the Fairchild F-27 propjet over the Andes with the Southern Cross constellation appearing above. The scene, part of a Gaynor & Ducas aviation series, was praised by former Gov. William Preston Lanc Jr. for calendar use and publicity.
Herald-Mail notes the Christ of the Andes statue, raised in 1904 as a pledge of peace between Chile and Argentina, now a symbol of hope as airplanes soar the Andes peak. The 26 foot figure atop a granite hemisphere by Mateo Alonso embodies peace ideals shared worldwide. The calendar also lists Hagerstown and Washington County fire alarm calls and emergency numbers.
The State Board of Revenue Estimates now projects Maryland will finish the current fiscal year with a deficit of 1.3 million dollars instead of a budget surplus. The revised figures also lessen expectations for next year’s revenue and will be used by Gov. McKeldin in crafting the 1956 budget for the legislature. McKeldin, already warned, plans to seek increases to balance the budget amid developments in sales and income tax measures linked to a proposed markers program and Maryland’s bicentennial efforts.

Three 13 year old youths and their reader from St Marys School trooped through North End to sing carols. Eddie Geary, John Stum, Eugene Knott, and Earl Knott planned the stroll last Christmas but illness halted it. They were invited for refreshments at the Harwood Road home.
