AP correspondent William Boni reports renewed German counter-attacks along the eastern end of the northern flank east of Melmedy during a dense air battle. The high command denied 10,000 Americans captured. U S troops resist in key towns and pockets as German forces press in a fluid battle with heavy air strikes and anti aircraft defenses.
Allied troops held St. Vith and Steve Lot areas yesterday morning as German armored columns pressed forward near Stavelot Malmedy and Spa. American anti aircraft crews claimed over 20 German planes shot down while fighting intensified east of St. Vith and coordinating RAF US air support. Front remained unsettled with strong enemy thrusts from Honsfeld toward Butgenbach and Stavelot as Hodges reinforced with infantry and armor amid mixed hospital seizures and counterattacks.
Public assistance payments totaled 621570 dollars in November, rising by over 5000 from October. The State Department of Public Welfare reported a continuing upward trend since August, when payments were 595244 dollars, with November 194? totals higher than the prior year’s 587,61.

Provard, father of Mrs. Trena Miller of 421 West Washington Street. The report also notes Chiang Kai shek trained in Japan.
Christmas toy shopping faces shortages as wartime restrictions linger for a second season. Store managers report limited new items, while Santa notes sensible wish lists among most children though some demand impractical items. In a separate dispatch, Southeast Asia Command reports two Chinese armies closing on a land route to China, meeting light Japanese resistance 84 miles from the Chinese Burmese border near Mandalay.
W D Grimes proprietor of the Plaza Restaurant on North Potomac Street received a returned Christmas card mailed last December to Pvt Ray Landis in care of the San Francisco postmaster. The card included a dollar bill and Grimes seeks to contact Landis or his family to return the card and arrange contact.
Hagerstown youngsters remain calm amid wartime toy shortages. One Santa Claus braved the weather to note children are nonchalant about the lack of rubber tired wagons electric eve illing and working toy electric fans as Christmas approaches.
FBI chief Hoover said ex-minister Krepper aided Nazi saboteurs, sent a December 1941 coded message to Germany, and acted as a Nazi agent without notifying the State Department. Indictments allege regular German payments to his wife in Germany and providing propaganda haven for persecuted Germans. Evidence includes a found white handkerchief marked with Krepper’s address.
